RIAA Forces Grokster to Shut Down

As part of a settlement with the Recording Industry Association of America, Grokster Ltd. will no longer provide illegal file-sharing software. This comes four months after the Supreme Court ruled against Grokster and other "peer to peer" networks.

"There are legal services for downloading music and movies. This service is not one of them," says a notice on Grokster's Web site. Mashboxx LLC is buying Grokster and turning it into a pay site to compete with iTunes and others.

"At the end of the day, this is about our ability to invest in new music. An online marketplace populated by legitimate services allows us to do just that," RIAA chairman Mitch Bainwol said in a statement.

  Investing in music?

What do you mean new? All they're going to do is order more boy band clones and blonde bimbo copies.

  You know

I am starting to belive that if the RIAA could sue you for remembering a song and not paying for it each time you thought about it, they would.
Their stance on piracy has not worked for anyone I know. I knew 5-6 people (inc myself) who would spend ~$50 per month on cd's. While also downloading some through napster (stuff you cant flat out buy in australia). They started sueing people, since then I have bought 1 CD. And that was a gift for someone else. They have lost more money from their 'anti piracy' stance, than they have from their fake lost cd sales figures.

  News Groups

The best way to download music is news groups, I use easynews and find all my musics, movies, pics and programs. Never worry about spam or virus thru it, but getting back to the story, like it was just said, take down one a new one pops up

Well as a Napster, Morpheus, Imesh, Winmx user I'm not suprised that Kazaa is gone Grokster being the parent of it. But I use Limewire Pro now..best thing..just download Limewire then search for Limewire pro cracked. Now I must go Jack Baur is onto me.

Folks the only reason why I do it because

1. You just can't get some indivdual songs on their own.
2. I hate albums because you only like the first 2 songs and hate the rest.
3. The price (Somewhat justified).

I don't think for one minute im affecting the artists, im affecting their agents and companies...furthermore I'm not very attune with what's new in music, so I download old hits and rarely new hits with have a beat and catchy tune.

Not saying it's legal or anything it's just very convienent and cost free...once you get use to it it's hard to think that your breaking the law and thinking hardly anything of it.

  bittorrent all the way!!!

I dont mess w/p2p services anymore...in fact, I just go ahead and download the whole album now! My hard drive got more than enough room...

But my take on this: If I were an artist, I would structure my deal around merchandise and ticket sales...that's where the money's at. I wouldn't care if I got a dime off record sales...get me a good cut on my concert instead!

And if you notice, a lot of people don't care about leaking that much...because they know where they're getting their money.

  Bit so what

"Grokster users will still be able to copy music, movies and software directly from each others' hard drives, as the decentralized nature of most peer-to-peer software makes it impossible to control once it is released on the Internet." And kazaa server links are reported to still be up also.

  I'm so happy

Sharing music, software and movies is legal here =)

  Its crap really

how many of you have downloaded tracks from some band you heard of via the net or some website or something your mate said was good. After d/l'ing a couple of tracks then getting the album legit. I know I have on many occasions and have discovered many great bands this way especially foreign bands. Some music I just would not have heard in the UK if it wasn't for P2P networks.
The RIAA are hurting their industry with these actions, I for one will not be buying albums while this continuing harrassment of P2P networks continues.

  grokster gone! / @ hotrock11

hooray! .. it was bloated with nothing but viruses, false files, RIAA set up servers, MPAA servers and the like. get rid of it, so something a little bit better can come along and fill the niche.

@hotrock -- bittorrent, is a P2P program, fella.

  Grockster VS Bittorrent

Most of the P2P services run on the Gnutella protocol and are decentralised, while Bittorrent files are organised through search engine websites.
