A study by US researchers from Georgetown University Hospital has found that ancient Egyptians respected dwarfs and did not see their height as a handicap. The research team studied biological remains and artistic proof of dwarfism.
Biological evidence of dwarfs dates back to the "Badarian Period" (4500 BC). At least 50 tombs depicted dwarfs, which is a good indication that they were integrated into society. Bes and Ptah, ancient Egyptian gods, were dwarfs.
One of the researchers, Fr. Chahira Kozma, said: "Wisdom writings and moral teachings in ancient Egypt commanded respect for dwarfs and other individuals with disabilities."
