Single Mother Fights RIAA Download Suit

Single mother Patricia Santangelo is one of the 16,000 people who have been sued by the RIAA for pirating music through peer-to-peer networking. Denying the claims, Santangelo has refused to settle the lawsuit.

Santangelo believes a young friend of one of her children downloaded the songs found on her computer. The 43-year-old "does not know Kazaa from kazoo and can barely retrieve her email," according to a federal judge.

Santangelo said of her decision: “It’s a moral issue. I can’t sign something that says I agree to stop doing something I never did.” Due to financial difficulties, Santangelo can no longer pay a lawyer and will represent herself from now on.

I love how the former lawyer took her money..

and after she dropped him, said in the article that
she doesn't need him for this case...

I love America...I can't think of any lawyers who
would take a case for free, but I can think of many
who will charge someone for a case that they don't
need repping for...(those open and shut cases that
are so easy that lawyers don't even care to work
outside of consulting meetings)

Actually, i'm lying. I do know ONE lawyer that would
have done it for free, but he usually will do it in an
"exchange" program.

Free/reduced repping for lawn service, or if he has
something that needs to be fixed and you can do
the job, or if he needs cleaning...

I know a lawyer like that too. I did PC Repair for him and he got me out of my Possession of Alcohol by a minor charges w00h00! Great guy. Speaking of that I still need that expunged!

Now to the story...I am glad she is fighting it. Too many people are being sued. John/Jane Doe lawsuits are ridiculous. I wonder if the EFF will front the money for her lawyer?

I would take that case for free... but then again, I'm not a lawyer. But if I was!

  SUE the RIAA

Somebody should sue the RIAA back for harrasement. They are openly loosing the battle against piracy and all they can come up with is suits against the jhon does of life. Besides, who cares about a couple of songs you can even record from your home radio?

  f*^k the RIAA

These pricks are under investegation for price fixing and controlling the music market and they have the hide to sue people that have refused to pay their illegal and inflated prices! These cases should be thrown out.

  My two cents

I'm waiting for the RIAA to be sued for monopolizing the music industry. I find it outrageous (sp?) that Microsoft gets sued for monopolizing a market, and the RIAA doesnt get sued for monopolizing the industry through confederation. Every big name music company is in it, so how is the little guy to compete? Hmm, I guess thats why Indie Music all of a sudden became a genre.

Though I never did understand the logic of these lawsuits. Sue the customer? Hmm...sounds like a smart idea...sue the people who allow you to take fat Christmas bonuses...Not to mention you are already selling us $15 cds that we both know only has one-three good songs on there, which are the only songs the customer wanted to begin with. But lets just sue all of them, hmm...16,000, multiply that by four (assuming at least four people get pissed at the RIAA for suing their friend or relative), and they boycott your music...thats about 64,000. Now lets say those 4 people buy one cd a year (priced $15), thats $960,000. Honestly, is $15,000 worth the 960,000 they could lose? Wheres the logic in these lawsuits? I spent 3 years boycotting RIAA, and have spent the last few months on a Russian website.

These guys lost the war because of sheer lack of foresighting. They should've tried to work with Napster, or set up CHEAP digital music markets. They have set them up (like itunes) but they still ain't cheap. 2.50 for one song? Wow..you're still trying to cheat me here. Who earns most of this money again? The artist? Uh yea...right...

My advice to the rest of ya: two nice websites: http://www.boycottriaa.com (to obviously find out more about the RIAA's antics). And http://www.mp3search.ru --Screw the RIAA, pay Russian prices! Which in USD, comes out to a very nice, very affordable, .10 per song, and an average of $1 per cd. (They pay royalties to the companies apparently too)

Judging by the facts that she is a single mother, and the source states that it is ONE of her childrens' friends, she probably "does not know Kazaa from kazoo and can barely retrieve her email". She's probably too busy taking care of her kids to fully learn to use a computer. Single parents have it rough.
