CAMANO ISLAND, WA - High winds on Christmas Day sent a tree crashing down on the trailer home of 52-year-old Richard Payne, who was disabled and lived alone on the family property. Trapped and without means of escape, he shot himself.
According to authorities, the man lived in a remote wooded area and had no telephone. Payne lived alone on disability benefits and had resided there for about a year.
The Christmas Day storm had knocked out power for approximately 20,000 area residents. A visitor found Payne on Sunday. He left no suicide note.
