Three People Shot During New Orleans Unity Parade

Gunshots were fired during a New Orleans Unity Parade sending three people to local hospitals with minor wounds last Sunday. Thousands of people gathered for the festivity in support of the renewal of the city.

Police officers that were patrolling the parade route heard the shots and found a 34-year-old man, an 18-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man shot in different locations. All three were listed in good condition that evening.

The motive behind the shooting is unknown and no arrests were reported in this incident. Delanda Garner, a New Orleans local, who had been staying in Huston attended the event; "This is not what I came back here to see."

Doesn't the New Orleans street rules state that there is no shooting during parties or that only apply to mardi gras?

 what?

  To several
 CrisW:

Firstly, everyone has the right to bear arms. Secondly, name one city major city where a shooting has not occurred.

mentally ill:

Name one major US city where it is safe and no violence occurs. If I'm not mistaken, there are far more deaths as the result of a vehicular accident than there are from guns. So then how about eliminating all cars just to make it safe?

tomblink:

After reading those comments, I was a little disturbed. One of the great things about New Orleans is the ethnic diversity. The residents of New Orleans, excluding any Parishes outside of it, are mostly black due to the poor neighborhoods, such as the Ward areas. However, he wasn't referring to the city of New Orleans and the small cities around it, but of NO itself.

I do believe he is sincere in wanting the same thing that Bill Cosby wants, to help the Black community bring itself up out of the slum that it has brought itself to. Unfortunately, many people in the Black community in New Orleans have a mindset that the government will take care of them, that the government is supposed to give them a free ride.

I have heard and seen first hand accounts of this attitude and mindset (afterall, I have lived in NO for 23 years). Probably the most memorative comment I heard came from a 23 year old black woman who lived in one of the worst apartment complexes in Southeast Louisiana. She was speaking on the phone with a friend and bragged about how the government was paying for her apartment. Oh, and she has four kids, mostly likely from at least two different men.

So everyone has the right to a gun. It doesn't seem to make the USA any safer though does it?
 by: CrisW   01/17/2006 07:08 PM
  @urmac
your arguments arent very good here. My statement said that flood compensation in new orleans wastes hard earned tax dollars, since the fed gov provides flood insurance, and people should just live elsewhere. You come and say that there is violence in all states, and vehicular homicide, im not sure how this fits in. maybe you missed my point

Safer or not, it's part of the Constitution, so therefore, the right is there. This doesn't reflect my personal feelings on the matter of guns.

The city of New Orleans has more of an impact on the US than you realize.

Do you realize how much comes in and out of New Orleans through trains and the Mississippi River? The US could survive, however, the economic impact would be large. Take out any other major city in the US, and the result would be the same: damaging long term economical effects. Why not say get rid of everyone in Florida? That state gets hit almost every year, and a few years ago, it got hit 3 or 4 times in a matter of months.

I did understand your response. My point is that Southeast Louisiana isn't the only unsafe place to live and that there are everyday, non-seasonal things that are very unsafe, such as driving an automobile (which brings more deaths than guns and hurricanes).

What hasn't been done is the proper direction in ensuring that New Orleans and its surrounding areas being better protected. I'm sure you noticed a handful of reports of millions of dollars not being properly spent on the levee system, and that nothing was being done when something should've been done. A big factor to this is because many residents and politicians who grew up here became arrogant in that New Orleans will never get hit. Surprise surprise.

  I am ashamed of N.O.
I live in Texas and me and a group of friends went there to help during the hurricane, we gave out sandwitches, chips, and lemonade. We heard so many remarks complaining that it was only sandwitches.

Im sorry but if i had no where to go and nothing to eat and someone was giving me free food i would NOT complain. I felt discusted and left after the first two days.

It is hard NOT feel racist after an expirience like that.

So we should get rid of all the guns we can find so that the criminals, who won't turn in their guns anyway, would be the only ones with guns. Sounds like a swell idea. I'm sure crime would decrease then. Even some idiot criminal could figure out how easy crime would be to commit if they didn't have to worry about breaking into houses with guns. You're a moron.
