French national Amelie Mauresmo has made it to the Australian Open final following the retirement of Belgian Kim Clijsters from the tournament after she badly twisted her ankle during the match.
The final result was 5-7, 6-2, 3-2 for Mauresmo. Clijsters was already suffering from injuries to her back and hips when she decided to play in the tournament. Mauresmo last made the final of the Australian Open 7 years ago, when she was beaten.
Clijsters said: "It's very frustrating because I felt in that third set I was getting into it and playing better again." Despite not finishing the match, Clijsters will be named the world's number one on women's circuit on Monday.
