VA Senate Passes Ammendment -- Leaves Gay Marriage Issue to Voters

With a vote of 28-11, the senate returned a bill to Virginia's house, tweaking a rider bill that passed with the original ammendment.

The proposed amendment in Virginia, which would become Section 15A in the state Bill of Rights, passed both the House and Senate in 2005, the first of two session votes needed. The amendment bans gay marriage, civil unions and domestic partnerships.

This ammendment states, "That only a union between one man and one woman may be a marriage valid in or recognized by this Commonwealth and its political subdivisions."

Also, citizens must attend church every Sunday and Wednesday, extramarital sex is banned, and witches will be burned at the stake.

Virginia is a VERY conservative state, I'd be suprised to see this get voted through.

  Hmm, yeah...

Leave it up to the people. Sure.

If desegregation would have been left to the people in the 1950's, it would've never happened.

I'm not so sure never is the right word...but that's hard to say after the fact, when people have been forced to accept it and change. The more compelling argument to me is, why should an American citizen have to wait for equal rights? It's all well and good to say, "Well, it'll come around when people are ready for it." Meanwhile, people are living and dying in a state of inequality in America. Tyranny by majority is no excuse for this.

Of course, then we have the argument of states rights...so I am not arguing this to say that action needs to be taken federally, but rather just to say, "Shame on you, VA."
