Israel will not Hold Talks with New Government

Israeli officials have said that they will not be holding any kinds of talks with the Hamas group, who yesterday was confirmed as the new ruling party of the Palestinian people. The win by the militant group sent shock waves around the world.

Israel’s acting Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, said: “The state of Israel will not negotiate with a Palestinian administration if even part of it is an armed terrorist organization calling for the destruction of the state of Israel.”

US President George W Bush responded to Hamas’s win with: “If your platform is the destruction of Israel, it means you’re not a partner in peace and we’re interested in peace.” Leaders from all over the world backed the sentiment.

  Hmm..
If they are the ruling party now, doesn't that make their (future) actions a military conflict and not terrorism?

Also, considering this group was *voted* into power, maybe the US and Israel should give some thought to the possible reasons behind that.

  Heh,
ain't democracy a b!tch! This shows that a Bush/Cheney/Rove style of freedom will never exist in the Middle East.

"I can't believe you won, I'm not talking to you." - Israel
How does not talking to them solve anything? This will just lead to more attacks. Is that what Israel is hoping to accomplish?

And now the Israelis can say
 The gloves come off.

  Actually
If you follow my reasoning in other threads regarding the Israel/Hammas connection - one wonders what this might really mean.

Israel secretly controlling palestine...

  Not a Problem
Well its not like the US or its allies have a problem with overthrowing democratically elected governments and establishing (US & Friends) friendly dictators. I dont have enough fingers to count the number of times the US has done this. So in otherwords I dont see Hamas winning the election as any problem at all. Im not saying america and its friends overthrow every government they dont like or anything though.

the Hamas group made by Israel
Just like the dictat of Versailles in 1919 made it possible for Hitler to be elected, so is the activity of Israel the basis for the Hamas group to find its support.
If you make it unnecessary for the Hamas group to provide shelter to people, help refugees, support widows, give people a dignity etc then there is no reason people would vote for them.

  Wait and see
One of my beliefs be it just pure optimism is that the reponsibilities forced upon Hamas will make them take a more pragmatic approach..sure they said in their charter they wanted the destruction of Israel but I feel it's only because Israel is a) Occupying Palestinian land or b) a) and the destruction of Israel.

Although peace is 2 way street, the coming Israeli elections whomever they elect must be willing to talk to Hamas when the time comes.

  You should be careful
 what you wish for Dubya
You said you wanted to spread democracy around the middle east and look you have it in Palestine but what's that.....you don't like the result so it don't count unless you are prepared to kow tow to the Israeli's who invaded Palestine after WW2 and have pursued open warfare against the Palestinian people funded by the US ever since. Shame on those Palestinians for not just humbly putting up with it.
And because the "voice of the people" doesn't agree with the US/Israeli agenda, they now want to remove $400 million worth of aid.

I think we can see what kind of "Democracy" Israel and the US want in the middle east and it's a sham

One more excuse not to hold peace talks.
In the beginning Hamas was actually encouraged by Israel as an alternative to PLO.

In my view Hamas should now create PDF, Palestinian Defense Force and absorb its current militia into it. An army which would be legally able to fire mortars at idf's military posts and settlers. Just like the Israelis they can now say "oh we are really very very sorry for the loss of innocent Israeli life, we were just trying to kill the Jewish militant we never intended to blow up the whole building. Sorry our bad."But they will have to give up suicide attacks.

I am seriously fed up with this conflict. Why doesn't UN intervene (I know its thanks to Uncle Sam) and force both parties to follow the roadmap. With hardliners on both sides in power, the conflict looks set to continue for another 50 years.

Since Jerusalem is holy to all 3 religions, it should be made a UN city or world city (whatever u wanna call it) if needed.

Your right, the UN should be in there but frankly either side would see it as either weakness or just backing down to the sworn enemy...it really is pathetic that religion is the cause of this, I don't see the need for it...religion that is..throw war in too.

Israel should move on and hand the land back and save future Israeli's from this war that started in 1967 for F-sake. The generations on both sides were brainwashed into this conflict thinking each was the chosen ones.

Give the land back, stop the violence, open the borders so people can work. If you remove the catalyst for violence which is occupation as is in Iraq you stop the need to retaliate and resist. If this is entirely true I'm not sure, both sides are too damn proud to back down enough.

There is talk now of Hamas wanting to create an army and include all the militas and forces. But if this army is created would that mean Hamas is no longer a terrorist militia? What would the legal implications be? Im not an expert and don't know enough - but would really like some opinions on this.
