Star Wars Sith Pirates Admit Watching DVD

Seven fans admitted pirating the DVD a week before its release in movie theatres and passing it among themselves. They also admitted allowing a copy to be put on the the Internet by a eighth person. They can each get fined $100,000 and a years jail.

One defendant is said to have taken a copy from a post-production house passed it around and then another passed it to the person who previously admitted uploading it. US laws have made releasing a film before its opening a federal crime!

Revenge of the Sith then went on to earn only $848.5 million dollars while Hollywood studios complained they lost $1.95b to piracy.

  I love how the studios
complain about how they lost all this money! "We lost so much money that we had to apply for food stamps just to keep out movies on budget...."

Ill admit that I came into posession of a copy of the latest SW movie but when it came out on DVD in stores I still bought it because I am a fan of the movie. Plus I saw it several times in theaters even though I had a copy of it. I just like to see it on a big screen and I like the DVD extras. Getting a pirated copy will never replace the feeling of seeing it on the big screen.

  I like
the 100k fine and years in jail bit.
All that for just pirating a movie they hurt know one. IMO the movie sucked if i were to have payed for it I would have been ripped off.

Make better movies???

  No they lost 1.95b
Because after the first screening, people were telling their friends it was crap and not to bother seeing it.

And it was crap - comparitively. I saw it once in the cinemas, I own the collectors edition dvd (just to have the set), but I certainly wouldnt recommend it to anyone who doesnt like or follow starwars - without that foreknowledge, it would be a rather bland and drawn out affair.

  how
can they possibly tell how much they lost?

  ...
How many movies have actually grossed almost 3billion dollars anyway :S theres no way they could have lost all that money...

  well
lost is a figurative term. If I lost money the way they do, I would retire.

  misleading report
No were in the article does it say "only 848.5 million dollars." It simply says it went on to earn 848.5 million dollars.

Also, Hollywood studios were complaining to have lost 1.95b to piracy. That is all of the pirated movies, not just Star Wars.

Just going to have to sell it on the internet then
Beat them to the punch. Sell the movie on the net before it comes out. People go to theaters because the screen is bigger than their monitor. Want proof? think about it. People still went to see the incredible hulk and it was leaked nearly 6 months in advance and was total crap. But 1.9 billion is such a lie. The people who have the pirated copies would not of paid for it and if they couldn't get it for free or cheap would go on with their lives with out the precious movie industry. I.e. No loss. The pirates didn't have it on them in the first place.

  I saw a bootleg of SW 3...
... it was terrible quality. Low-resolution, voices out-of-sync. I waited for the stores to carry the film and bought it then- and it has all the cool extra features.

  ditto @ complaining studios
friggin ridiculous. how the hell does a studio determine the ammount of money lost on a movie due to piracy? .. id like to see the formula. can i claim that the mpaa, and bad movies have made me lose a million, by the same token?

i guess they never considered that the movies that come out now are for the most part, junk.
