Obesity Hormone Treatment Praised

Scientists from the Imperial College London have found that boosting up the levels of a hormone found naturally in the human body led to a reduced appetite and higher activity levels in the test subjects, with the only side effect being weight loss.

The hormone, oxyntomodulin, is what tells our brains we're full after a meal, but a lot of people who struggle with obesity have less of this hormone than those who do not put on weight. The weight loss in test cases has been sustained.

Professor Steve Bloom from the college said: "It's not like one of those nasty drugs where you have to take some horrible chemical for years. It is naturally a occurring hormone. We are using the body's own method of limiting appetite."

for these "fat" people who need this drug..

Let me do it. I'll charge $1000 a week, and I'll teach you my method for weight loss.

First, you pick up a cupcake, then I slap it out of your hand. Then we repeat that until you get the point. Then we move on to pork chops, etc.

There ARE people who are fat for reasons other than gluttony, you know. People who struggle with cravings (feel like they are starving 100% of the time) for example. Often for these people it is the body itself that is out of whack - hormones out of balance (PCOS can cause this), a developed resistance to certain hormones or low production of the same.

Imagine that no matter what you do, you are starving all the time - its not just a case of dont eat junk food.

  Another

reason for people not to exercise. The easy way out for people to lose weight. You can blame society for the over size portions. If you look back in the day of our grandparents, there wasn't over eating people...

  However,

It is also true that the people in the day of our grandparents were also more active. There were fewer implements in the home to entertain the individual. Also families generally ate a meal at home ,usually healthier, than venturing out for fast food such as is common today.

  I get the impression..

that few people have read the source.

This is a hormone treatment for people who have a deficiency. It's not a 'method' for weight loss, and it's not an 'easy way out', it's a treatment for a biochemical problem. If you don't have an oxyntomodulin deficiency (and are overweight), this treatment won't do a thing for you.

As i have said before, your take on overwight people is nothing short of hte take on blacks by the sotheners 100 years ago. Not all overweight people are lazy. I do more exercise, and eat less than everyone I know yet I am overweight. Why you may ask? Because I have a problem where I have virtually zero motabolism (sp?) and other blood sugar problems (not diabeties). I dont know if this treatment would help me, but if it did that would be wonderful. BTW if you were curious I eat a diabetics diet (due to other blood sugar problems) I also do 2 martial arts and play tennis. Hardly 'lazy' by any standards yet no doubt you still assume its all 'cup cakes and pork chops'.

  Wow.

Here's my method for treating depression -- I see you making a sad expression, I slap your face until you snap out of it. I bet it would work for diabetes, too! You complain you're dizzy and sleepy, I slap you until you stop saying that. This treatment could also work as the cure for the common cold -- you sneeze, I slap you. </sarcasm>

How fair is it to treat people who may have lower levels of a hormone that regulates obesity as though they have some sort of character flaw?

  not a quick fix drug

All it's doing is making sure people's brans are able to register when the body feels full. Even on it someone would therefore only loose weight if what they ate reasonably heathily. It's unfair to pick on obesity as it is a far more varied issue than ''hey you don't eat so much' In a society where obesity is a huge health issue urely anything that helps people with weight issues is a blessing. Though i do differentiate between what some class as overweight and obesity. there is nothing wrong with being larger unless it has health impilcations
