NHS May be Ordered to Pay for 74-Year-Old's Hip Replacement

74-year-old Yvonne Watts has won what could be a landmark court case after having a hip replacement operation and then asking the NHS to foot the £4,000 bill. The EU judges did not award her the repayment but referred the decision to local courts.

Local courts are to decide whether Yvonne Watt suffered “undue delay” before going to France for her operation. Bedford Primary Care Trust had refused to pay the bill and hence the court case.

Under EU regulations regarding free movements, one healthcare provider should pay the bill if patients are forced to seek elsewhere for their treatment provided there are delays.

  Why Not
If you have worked all your life [paid all the taxes and your stamp, why not be able to have a deeply painful condition helped.
We do enough here for outsiders to jus come and have a quick fix, why not our own people.

The NHS should NOT pay.. she was given a waiting time of 4 months, which isn't really that long considering its the NHS.

If she chooses to go private then so be it, thats her choice and she should pay the bill.

If the NHS pay for this then everyone with a waiting time over >month will goto france or private clinics and the NHS will be footed with a massive bill.
