Student Suspended for Sharing Caffeine Gum with Classmate

A female student at the Huston Middle School in Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania, was given a three day suspension for giving another student Jolt Gum because it contains caffeine.

New Jersey based GumRunners, the manufacturer of the gum, said two pieces have as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. Pediatrician Dr. Kultar Shergill says too much caffeine in teens can deplete calcium, cause depression and affect the heart rate.

Said Shergill, "That's of particular importance for teenagers during growth spurts who need a full night's rest and an adequate supply of calcium." School officials state possessing the gum is okay, but giving it to others goes against the rules.

  holy hell that is rediculous...
That school must be against sharing pop too... god forbid you give a friend a sip of your pop. Or chocolate... teacher's can't give out candy anymore... that's got caffeine too... such crap... do they ever stop to think about what they are enforcing before they start enforcing it... schools go way overboard on some of this crap...

  Oh my god
"Oh no, my son had a cup of coffee! Call the paramedics!"

What a load of crap. A perfect example of how we overmother and overprotect our kids today. And of course, how scared silly that schools are today because parents have such powerful legal tools at their disposal.

Just out of curiosity, how does a Big Mac diet affect a teenager? Hm? Think there might be a chance of some adverse side effects that are perhaps a BIT more concerning than having a cup of coffee?

Sad thing is, society is letting it happen.

  student with a history?
In public schools suspension usually occurs after a written notice to the parents or guardians of a student that exhibits disruptive behaviour. For this girl to get in trouble for passing around chewing gum is one thing, for her to be suspended is another.

However, caffeine is a drug and it even has worth health consequences than marijuana, especially for growing teens.

  Anyone know..
Anyone know if this school has soda machines in it.. If so.. The school distict needs to be sued by the parrents. After if they can suspend a student for caffine gum, they should be able to be sued for distribution of the substance. >And I'm willing ot be a Big Mac is WAY better than the school lunch.. execpt on pizza day..<

If you insist on classifying caffeine as a "drug", then by the same definition sugar is also a drug. And I have to say one that is a lot more damaging to children than having a cup of coffee.

But unlike the sugar industry, I guess caffeine don't have enough lobbyists on the payroll in Washington, so coffee is illegal and sugar loaded products are sold or given away for free in school canteens. Where exactly do you think this obesity "epidemic" is coming from?

It's not coffee, that's for sure.

as OTT is this may seem
if the kid had some kind of adverse reaction to the chewing filth no doubt there would have been some kind of law suit against the school and since schools dont give caffeinated beverages to kids the school

  Insane.
That last post seems to be unfinished ...
Anyway, this is insanity that I've come to expect from American schools. The only time I ever here of things like this occuring (Kids being suspended for drawing a picture of a gun or someone hanging for example and being suspended for it) are when it's in America ... Are American schools really this stupid? Or is it just the odd case or what ... I can't recall hearing about something like this from another country anyway ...

It's due to the moronic 'Zero-Tolerance' rules in the US school system.
