Air Marshals Recording Innocent Passengers to Meet Quota

A recent investigation by 7NEWS uncovered an alleged secret quota system for the reporting of suspicious persons or activity on American aircraft.

Air Marshalls must meet the quota in order to gain raises, bonuses, awards, or special assignments, which has allegedly lead to completely innocent people being listed in the Surveillance Detection Reports.

According to a July 2004 memo, each Air Marshal is required to submit at least one SDR per month. Passengers listed on an SDR could be placed on a watch list, or be submitted to databases that identify potential terrorists and threats to aircraft.

  It makes sense...
The government creates the boogeyman "terrorist," thereby creating the fear needed for control of the people, the Patriot Act, and Homeland Security. But they have to keep up with the front of actually protecting you against terrorists, so they set attractive bonuses to the Air Marshals, who in turn do whatever they need to make a few extra bucks, at the expense of an innocent person.

  your kidding right?
When I am flying, I could pick out 2-4 people on the plane that would be the greatest risk to the public or aircraft. Meeting 1 SDR quota per month is rediculiously low. If I was an Air Marshal, they would be swamped with paper work with my reports.

Not boogeyman terrorists! We are already dealing with zombie terrorists in Minnesota, we are not prepared for boogeyman terrorists too. What’s next, vampire terrorists, mummy terrorists, and werewolf terrorists? I can’t take any more of this!

On a more serious note: I think anyone on the “terrorist watch list” should have the right to sue the hell out of the government for putting them on this hate list unless the government has a very very legitimate reason, ie. a criminal act. The Constitution guarantees the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, this is a direct violation of these rights. Our government has gone list happy in their attempt to justify their existence. I’m not convinced their existence is necessary any more. The government was created by the people to serve the people, not to oppress the people. Our government has mutated into a vicious hydra that has turned on the people and it needs to be put down.

Why is it that every congressman that gets elected thinks their job is to create and/or sign as many laws restricting our freedom as possible?

  @Lardi (and slayer)
No, slayer has paranoia and a misunderstanding of what the marshals are supposed to be doing behind him. They are supposed to be logging incidents of genuinely suspicious activity, not simply picking out "2-4 people on the plane that would be the greatest risk to the public or aircraft." Slayer says they would be swamped with his paperwork, but I think the marshal interviewed in the source said something quite apt about this: "It's intelligence information, and like any system, if you put garbage in, you get garbage out."

This is a detriment to the system and a crime against the innocent citizen. This is also the same kind of intelligence manipulation that brought us the war in Iraq. "Provide us with the numbers to justify our actions." Garbage in, garbage out, indeed.

  Airborne bureaucrats ?
As it was many time before, government created another monster that works totally different than original intent was. Airlines are using security threat left and right to intimidate passengers. Now this report… I hope there actually were cases when it did prevent disaster, because we do suffer huge setback on the air travelers rights.

  about 1984...
it isnt happening now, it has already happened, we ARE in 1984... dont believe me? try to research sometime about how private your lives really are and how much control you actually have. the stuff that were going into now... its much beyond 1984

No, I think its worthless to have the airplane blown up first before something is done...vs have something done before it is distroyed. I think your the type that likes something to happen before the preventave measures.

Your more likly to die from suicide than a terrorist attack. Does that mean the government should be allowed to watch us all 24/7 so we dont suicide?

Was that supposed to be a rebuttal, or simply an example of why they train air marshals to not act like panicky civilians? The article makes pretty clear what air marshals are supposed to do and it is not what you, in your state of fear, would do. If whenever you fly you can pick out 2-4 people easily who you worry about as threats to the airplane, then yes, you're paranoid and and would do poorly at a job like this which necessitates unclouded judgement.

People like you have already been conquered by the terrorists. Because of what they have done, you would strip citizens of their freedoms and change our way of life, which is exactly what they wanted. Some of us are trying to hold on to American principles, a real task when other Americans are so fear-stricken that not only do they fail to defend them, but they will surrender them voluntarily!
