Condoleeza Cartoon Shows Her Pregnant with Monkey

As US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice attends the Middle East over the continuing conflict, it appears that some local newspapers are producing some insensitive cartoons--with Palestinian newspaper outlets being accused of outright racism.

The caricature depicts Rice as pregnant, with the image of a monkey in her abdominal region. Other references in the articles call her "The black spinster", "black woman" and "child murderer".

The cartoon is meant to make light of Rice's vision of the "birth" of a "new Middle East". "The Palestinians hate her because of her arrogance and because of the policy she represents," said a local newspaper editor.

  and?

none of those names are really racist. calling rice black is an observation of reality. why mention it at all? perhaps because she's considered an uncle tom to most people in the world.

as far as the monkey thing goes, that's not neccessarily racist either. it simply means she's primitive (stupid or crude). darwin was drawn as a monkey too. am i sure the people who made that cartoon aren't racist? no, but imposing our western taboos of race on a different culture is just an attempt to blow things out of proportion. "see, everyone against israel is a racist! first mel gibson, now the palestinians. chomsky is an anti-semite too!"

OK, i hate the B!tch too and she is a baby killer

but this is racist and same way muslims went balistic about the muhamed cartoon, they should accept it if anti racist groups go balistic about this.

well, the mohammed cartoons were a bit different since it's offensive to muslims to depict him in any way (idol worship). like i said, i don't know if these people are racist, nor do i pretend to understand their cultural context. what i do know is that these cartoons seem fairly mild in comparison to the press they're getting.

israel is pretty damn racist too. take notice on how none of their racist cartoons, comments from politicians, or laws regarding race are being mentioned.

ok, you made a good point and i agree... but i still think media in general should be more respectfull!

  At least the US

has a sense of humor and they are not yelling "death to the infidels", blowing up stuff, and other immature stupidity, as when the mohammed cartoons were made. Shows which people are REALLY at the shallow end of the gene pool.

well, making fun of someone at the "shallow end of the gene pool" doesn't put you in the deeper end.
The mohamed one, as manila mentioned was totally against their religion. You should never draw Mohamed and if you do without the face.
As for being in the shallow end of the gene pool, i suggest you also look at the good things muslims did (the ones doing all the mess do not represent all muslims):

why are people so insensitive... when the cartoons about the prophet mohammed surfaced those stupid arabs were up in arms.. and now this.. whether you like Condie Rice or not It is racist.

  This reminds me...

This reminds me of the South Park episode where Chef tries to get the South Park flag changed because it shows a bunch of white people hanging a black person. The kids are asked to have a debate about this issue and the press covers it. The boys are placed on the side of keeping the flag. In the end, Chef confronts the boy’s “racist” stance. The boys get a look of utter befuddlement on their faces. They have no idea what Chef is talking about. You see, they did not see white guys and black guys. They just saw a group of people. The moral…..sometimes crying racist can be racist in and of it’s self.

Right. That's why we have this war, right? Because we've the most mature, rational government in the world.

Let's face it--politicians are a bunch of four year olds who haven't learned to share, and throw temper tantrums [and warheads.]

  by: vanillaskye   08/03/2006 05:05 PM
  umm....this is clearly racism...

I thought "tar baby" was easy enough to show...

black woman pregnant with a monkey baby? I
honestly don't see how anybody can tell another
person "no...nothing wrong with that..."

I guess if they drew her with big lips and a huge
plate of fried chicken and watermelon it would still
be downplayed as not racist.

Yea, she is a black spinster. Yea, she's clearly a
black woman. I don't know about child murderer...

....but having her give birth to a monkey not being
racist??? Wow....I don't know who's more out of
touch with reality...

  by: hotrock11     08/03/2006 06:06 PM
  for non US peeps

calling black people a monkey is a historical way to slander them here in the US, and i doubt they just randomly picked out a type of animal.

i also can't believe the people that think this isn't racism. and defending muslims for RIOTING because it's against their religion to even have a picture of him. would you defend the catholic church? they would put out a press release and people here would call us backward.

and what if GW called a black liberal a monkey? i bet THAT would be considered racist.

  by: Smiles   08/03/2006 08:31 PM
  ...

Okay, I didn't know calling a black person a monkey was any different than calling a white person one. There are far more worse racial slurs, gestures, name calling than this cartoon, in my opinon.

Secondly, the only person that should be offended is Rice. I do not understand why anyone else should be offended. The connotation doesn't
mean every black person is a monkey. Whereas the connotation from the Denmark cartoon, every muslim was a terrorist.

I suppose Rice drawn as a snake would have been a more accurate picture?

  racism

"…..sometimes crying racist can be racist in and of it’s self."
That is really the only racism that still exists. It's kept alive by groups that wouldn't need to exist if racism was gone. Like the NAACP or any group involved with Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton.

Why does it matter if it's racist? In fact, why is this even a story? They made a "cartoon" depicting someone in quite a negative light. Whoop-e-doo.

  by: Svengali   08/03/2006 11:02 PM
  NOT RACIST!!!

The only way someone could view it as racist is if they thought the cartoon was calling black people monkeys... which it is not.

It is playing at the notion that C Rice wants to create a new middle east that will be the US's monkey...

PS. I haven't read any of the above posts.. so i apologize if i'm going over old material

  by: ironic   08/03/2006 11:39 PM
they have a right to do this

Because Rice has no right to assume she understands the workings of the middle east. She's spent hardly any time at all there, she's never seen it from the eyes of the people, and I would be you she hardly knows anything about their religion or traditions beyond what our media publishes to put Muslims in a bad light.

She has no right to be there. She has no right, and is not qualified, to try to shape a region she understands so little about.

Are you all not seeing a pattern here? How many countries has Rice visited, that have held protests in some way or anything telling her to get the F*** out of their country? Does she really have their best interests at heart? Hell no. And they understand that. Americans should too.

  by: maverick7h     08/04/2006 01:09 AM
  @hotrock & others

"I guess if they drew her with big lips and a huge plate of fried chicken and watermelon it would still be downplayed as not racist."

Why should it be considered racist? It is a stereotype, yes, but "stereotype" is the politically incorrect word people like to rationalize with in place of "statistics".

Statistically speaking, the majority of black people have large lips. Is there anything wrong with that? No.

Statistically speaking, a disproportionate number of black people enjoy fried chicken. Is there anything wrong with that? No.

Americans like pizza. A lot. Its a cultural icon (and we didn't even invent it, in fact, we disgrace it). If somebody from Europe was to publish a cartoon of an American eating pizza, would anybody consider that racist? I think not.

So why are we conditioned to believe drawing a large-lipped black person eating fried chicken racist? Because anti-racist leaders like in the NAACP would have NOTHING to do if they didn't make up such bullocks in an attempt to give their people a free advantage in society, when in these times they have every right to accomplish anything and everything that "white" people can.

In my opinion, "affirmative action" is one of the most disgusting and racist things our country has ever created. There was a time where such things were justified, but that time has passed.

In fact, if it weren't for organizations such as the NAACP, there might not even BE racism in America. At least, it would be much lesser.

  Racist?respect?went ballistic?

Condoleeza came to beirut and said: No for cease fire, her words means extend of war while the lebanese prime minister was begging for cease fire.
4 massacres done by israel so far : Marwaheen, Qana (2nd time), Srifa and today AL-Kaah (u didnt mention that as news,33 deads in that area). so the local newspapers must "respect" her and not be "racist" while she stand up with her arrogancy and called for no cease fire? I dont think so.

You're right. She's a b***h. I'm sorry you have to go through what you do and it infuriates me when a "representitive" of the US makes it even worse for you.

  by: maverick7h     08/06/2006 03:17 AM
  LOL

Strangely, the first thought I had about the monkey wasn't that it was racist, but that she was pregnant with GWB's child...

by: Mister crank     08/06/2006 04:47 AM
  rice... a monkey...

one could argue she is... along with bush, cheney, blair and the rest of those knuckle-dragging primatives. as for monkey being a racial slur... so is her name if you happen to be talking to an asian person.

is this cartoon racist, i can't see how, and by the way comparing a cartoon target one person (for political, and for those in the affected country's probably personal reasons aswell) to one that blankets an entire culture labeling them as terrorists is a hell of a stretch.

anyone ever see the cartoon about american foreign policy that has been printed in canada... bush driving a tank with harper on the side (taking canada to war).

  Have a Heart!

Please don't compare her and fellow politicians with monkey; monkeys are cute!

  by: DarkAngelJG     08/06/2006 01:51 PM
  A little observation

This cartoon is sure racist and I think the idea was to humilliate her, since this is how most palestinians feel about the US/Israel. Mind you I have no sympathy for her or what she believes/represents.

To those of you bringing up the subject of the danish cartoons (of prophet Mohammed), dont forget that the Danish newspaper who comissioned the cartoons also refrained from publishing a few making fun of Jesus some months earlier.

Now, I think the west is quite hypocritical about religion issues. The mainstream media loves to make fun of all religions apart from christianity and likes to call itself free and fair. If you show no respect towards others how can you expect others to respect you?

The same goes for terrorism. Does anybody thinks those men and women that blow themselves up do it for pleasure? It seems to me more like an act of utmost despair when all you have/believe is lost. Does anybody think that children grow up willing to become suicidal terrorists? How would you cope with a larger, oppressive occupation force, one you cannot fight openly against? What are the choices? We should try to put themselves in the place of others, it gives us a different view of matters...

What more and more people fail to understand is that we are all the same, the differences are all 'maya', all illusions of the mind. We are all bound to the same destiny in the long run, we are all crew in this spaceship earth, if I may borrow Mr Mailer's words.

"After the game king and pawn go to the same box"

  by: _strider_   08/08/2006 04:08 PM
  I live in the South

and calling someone a "Porch Monkey" or their children "Yard Apes" is certainly racist. If you say, "John Doe is a f-ing porch monkey" it is considered to be racist hate speech despite the fact that you didn't say that all people of a particular group are porch monkeys. Do you still think it isn't a racist cartoon? This isn't the first racist cartoon directed at Condi either.

  Tomblik

in arabic calling someone a monkey can mean they are either ugly or mad.
As a kid i was called monkey by my older cousins or family members because i used to jump around and spread havoc!
so, honestly it's nothing to do with her colour...i thought it was at the begining but thinking about it, it has NOTHING to do with her colour or race.

  by: DarkAngelJG     08/11/2006 10:42 AM
  @DarkAngelJG

that is so true, i also was called a monkey when i was young coz i used to jump all around.
the arabs dont have the problem of color racism and specially the black, no need to say that most of arabs tend to have color close to black coz they have hot weather, such as most of arab countries in africa for example. so calling condoleeza a monkey is an expression of anger against her coz of her political acts and has nothing to do with her color

  by: DarkSide79   08/11/2006 01:42 PM
  @ Darkside79

monkey monkey monkey!
*pokes ur tummy*!
oh well!
there can be racism (i've seen it used by libyans, sudanese and egyptians) but by non educated/ ignorant people definatly not in the media.
But yes, as dark79 confirmed... it is used for those monkeying around (used in a non offensive/ cute way, parents use it too!) like us 2 OR could be used in an expression "as ugly as a monkey" when someone is very ugly but nothing racial here.
