Iraq's Shia Call 'Million Man March'

Shias from the southern and central regions of Iraq have begun their journey to Baghdad waving flags and chanting "Death to America! Death to Israel", in answer to Muqtada al-Sadr's call for a "million man march" in support of Lebanon's Hezbollah.

Sahib al-Ameri, a director of the Foundation for God's Martyrs, told reporters: "Thousands of Najaf people have set off for Baghdad as a response to Moqtada al-Sadr's invitation to take part."

The march comes at a tense time in the Iraqi capital when many are now beginning to talk of civil war. The Shias have an uneasy relationship with the US-backed government and security in the capital has been tightened.

the whole thing will end up BAD, even if they make a ceasefire... the government screwed up so bad, even the next US president will be hated thanks to the current one and his buddies!

  Next US President

Next US President should be Raul Castro

That Way

1 no Beef with Iraq
2 no Beef with Chavez
3 no Beef with Cuba
even less people in prison that currently under lock and key in the US. Free education for all (and reading some of the comments here phewww does America need an education. Public Health service

and everyone's happy (well not the fortune 500 but ehhh screw 'em)

(of course I’m joking because the US is a one party state (but they actually try to let on there are two ) so there's no room for Castro to run :-)

  Million Man Marches

Like most 'Million' Man Marches, this one will end up with a only few thousand or couple of hundred guys...

At least, that's the pattern based on the fad that occured in the USA about 8 years ago.

A good extremist is hard to find these days.

  Thousands or Hundreds?

Do not underestimate Muqtada al Sadr, if he asks for a million there will be close to a million. Although this event is quite worrying, strangely reminds me of Mussolinis Million Man March (although circumstances and support were entirely different, it is still a show of personal power).

hope it doesn't turn into "million man riot"

What with the "Death to America" stuff, high tensions, all it will take is a Sunni/Kurd/Shi'a/US/ba'ath activist/agent/soldier to kick things off and turn it into a bloodbath political/media opportunity/justification. (delete as appropriate).

On on had, demonstrators will look on this as a chance to inflame the local population and international community. On the other hand, the governing parties will look upon this as an opportunity to get a few activists out in the open and have them 'fatally injured' in some scuffles ensuing.

One point of interest is that, Shi'as (62% of Iraq) were reported to be one of the bodies of people that was being liberated from Saddam's regime.

  Obviously no women

will be permited.

For the Sunni's it will be like shooting Shia in a barrel.

It will end in everyone forgiving and saying peaceful things about the other side. A few billion people may have to die first though before everyone gets it.

  Trouble!

Most of the Sunnis already hate the US. If Shia sentiment turns you're going to see a LOT more US soldiers coming home in flag draped coffins. Their blood will be on the hands of the current US administration.
