For the first time matter and anti-matter have been combined to form a new substance called protonium. Consisting of a negatively charged antiproton and a positively charged proton, the matter remained in existence for a millionth of a second before annihilation.
The new substance was created by accelerating matter to 97% of the speed of light, hitting a target, then slowing it down to just 10% of the speed of light. After several stages of cooling, the antiprotons were caught in an electrostatic trap.
A research group called The Athena collaboration has been using the CERN lab in Geneva to perform the experiments.
