Changchun Beijiao prison in northern China has begun teaching Confucius to prisoners as a method of rehabilitation. The prisoners receive the sayings of Confucius on closed circuit televisions in their cells.
Prison warden Yang Mingchang said, "The studies of Chinese traditional culture can help inmates cultivate virtues and form good behaviors."
Confucius was an ancient philosopher who taught that individual self-refinement could lead to a harmonious society. His works were popularized by the rulers of the Western Han Dynasty before spreading to Europe in the latter part of the 16th century.
