Turkey: 73-year-old Ismail Canseven, from the province of Kutahya, has been sentenced to a 26-day course in reading and writing at the public library for failing to vote in the election for the cooperative's board of directors.
Turkish law obligates people to vote in elections. The man's son, Isa Canseven, plans to appeal the sentence. He claims that his father's eyesight is so poor he cannot find the toilet except by following a piece of string.
A local newspaper quotes Ismail as saying, "What am I going to do in a library? I can't see out of either of my eyes, and I can't read or write anyway."
