59-year-old Miyoko Kawahara has had her sentence increased from 12 to 20 months jail by the Osaka High Court. Kawahara was charged after she blasted her neighbour with non-stop dance music from November 2002 until April 2005 when she was arrested.
Her neighbour was diagnosed with insomnia and headaches which doctors attributed to the noise. Japanese law allows sentences of up to 10 years jail for inflicting injury on another person.
According to police the neighbours had a number of other disputes. In increasing the sentence the court noted that Kawahara "still maintains a hostile attitude toward the victim and it is highly likely she will commit the crime again."
