The number of people dying on Chinese roads in 2006 was down 9.4 percent on the previous year. In total, 89,455 people were killed. Deaths occurring as a result of speed, fatigue, and alcohol were also reported to be down 24 percent on the previous year.
Major traffic accidents, defined as accidents that kill ten or more people, were also down 30 percent for the year. 558 people died in 38 major accidents.
130 million traffic violations were reported during the year. The Ministry of Public Security said that for the first time since 2000, the toll has fallen below the government's target of 90,000.
