Toddler Dies in Hot Car

Two-year-old Maryan Kamal died yesterday after getting trapped in the family car she was playing in. Her mother, Khadija, found her after an hour. The mother of six lost track of the children when she was putting groceries away.

Ms Kamal, 35, and her eldest daughter tried to revive Maryan while waiting for the ambulance to arrive, but to no avail. She had no pulse when paramedics arrived. After working on the child for 50 minutes she was rushed to hospital.

Detective Sergeant Mark Guthrie said that the car door may have been left open after shopping and the child crawled in. The doors were closed but not locked and the windows were up. The car was parked in the back yard where there was no shade.

I've heard of this kind of thing happening a couple of times before, I'm not sure if fatalities resulted but I know that brain damage was thought to have occurred in in one case. I wonder if it's possible to put a small vent or series of vents into the roof of a car that would open and allow the heat to dissipate somewhat while the car is off. It would also mean that stuff in your car wouldn't get cooked as often.

No, but if it was hot and raining your car would get wet.

I'd rather have a dead child than wet seats.

This story leaves so many unanswered questions in my head.. If the doors were left open, how did 2 year old shut them? How can you have a 2 year old and not get concerned if you haven't seen her in over an hour?

There are many more, but I don't read long posts I skip them.

very funny, but seriously, there has to be some way to use smart technology that would open the vents on a clear day, and close them if, maybe, it wasn't very hot or if it were raining/snowing etc.

There already is stuff like that. I have an alarm that supports such features they are just plug ins.

It will crack the window if the temp raises above a certain amount, it closes the windows with rain. If it is below a certain temp it will start the car every few hours so nothing freezes up.

Now THAT is something that should be standard on all cars now.

Although I have to say, with six fricken kids, either stop having them if you cant watch them all or hire a nanny.
