Metal Thief Deliberately Saws Off Iron Roof Supports, Dies

An Ohio man is dead after an ill-conceived attempt to steal metal. Police believe that 41-year-old Marvin Dixon wanted to steal some iron roof supports, possibly for scrap. This is similar in concept to the better known copper wire thieves.

The only issue was, the iron beams supported the roof of the building he was in. Not deterred, the man used his tools to hack, chop, and otherwise tear through the metal. His endeavor proved to be disastrous.

The weakened roof supports could no longer handle the massive weight of the roof above him, and the structure promptly collapsed, with Dixon underneath it. Emergency crews arrived to pull him from the rubble, but he died soon after.

scrap metal industry is a booming trade.
turnover for scrap metal merchants goes into millions a year for even small to medium sized companies.

scrap metal can be recycled and sold back to the person who produced the waste or to a developing country.

Sometimes, opportunist and thieves steal metal from roofs, railway tracks, supports and sell them to scrap metal merchants to recycle. These opportunists are trying to make a quick buck.

...of the metals being scrapped in the USA right now are being sold to scrap yards at insane prices. Most of the metal is also going to China.

It's nice when the karma collector comes calling!

I'm for stricter penalties, if you are willing to steal bolts off a roof for money, you really are a mess and a menace.
