Student Puts Hydrochloric Acid in Teacher's Water Bottle

Zachary Midgette, a student from Cary High School, has been arrested after he allegedly put hydrochloric acid and zinc chloride in a science teacher's water bottle. Either substance is potentially fatal.

The seventeen-year-old has been charged with assault on a government official, a misdemeanor which has a maximum sentence of 150 days in prison. Other students at the school are reportedly very upset and angry over the incident.

An investigation by the school is also underway with Midgette likely to be either suspended for a long period, expelled, or moved to another school. The teacher has returned to her classroom.

  i am realy surprised
they havevt tried the student for attempted murder since both contaminents could have caused death and i have to say it is good to hear the other students were outraged.

Students might make jokes about putting hydrochloric acid in a teacher's drink... but to actually do it suggests that this 'child' is seriously in need of some therapy.

While I don't like to see student aged citizens be charged with crimes, when it's assault-- and through a particularly insidious means such as in this case-- the individual should face severe charges.

Hydrochloric acid can dissolve protein and fats quickly--- imagine one's liver suddenly liquifying....

Pish, put a drop of HF on'em. That stuff reacts with the calcium in your body and messes up your organs.

  does this seem...
a little bit light of a sentence for someone to put hydrochloric acid in a drink? There are worse fines and punishments for punching somebody in the face. I don't know about you, but I would rather get hit than ingest acids.

I guess it would depend on the concentration of the acids.. We produce HCL in our stomachs so it's not as if spiking a drink with HCL is introducing a completly foreign substance. If it was undiluted and she drank it straight, that could be deadly. But if it was say a ml of acid diluted into a standard water bottle I don't think there would be cause for medical concern.

Either way, the kid needs to be put away and kept away from industrial chemicals.

  Jeez 150 days?!
From reading the full article, the substances can close off your esophagus and could cause 150 days? Not only does he deserve quite a bit more time in jail to think about the seriousness of the crime, but he also needs extensive therapy as well. This "kid" is an adult and therefore should stand trial for something other than "assault on a government official"...maybe something on the lines of attempted murder?

  150 days...?
150 is way to light of a sentence for someone who could have killed another with some potent chemicals. He should be heading to the jail for a good 5-10 years IMO.

So he only has like half a year in jail for giving his teacher mustard gas?
  by: steme   01/11/2007 08:12 PM
The HCl used by students in high school is always very very very diluted.

  Hydrochloric Acid
Is the main chemical in toilet bowl cleaners, I have got that crap on my floor and it melted the carpet.

HCL is the reason your stomach is acidic. It would have to be very concentrated to do a bit of harm. Frankly the teen wasted his time... instead he shoulda broke into the teachers restrooms and applied icee hot over the toilet seats. That would do a lot more damage.

Most production types are nasty stuff and will burn the hell out of your skin and most of the stuff you get it on, I know because I have done it,
so just think if you drank it.

150 days, and scarred the rest of his life....
This won't disappear from his past, ever. Not only is he bubba's for just under half a year, he see what lifes like once you're forced to be institutionalized, and won't want to go back.

Also now, for any job interview, if a criminal backround check (which is most likely) is required, he's screwed. He gets ripped in jail and branded when released with an embarrassing failed attempt.

  Can you blame...
the poor kid his last name's "Midgette" for pete's sake, he got the short end of that stick
