Naum Ciomu, a Romanian surgeon, has had his medical licence suspended after he lost his temper and amputated his patient's penis, cut it up on the operating table and left the room. The operation was supposed to correct a testicular malformation.
Ciomu was under stress and accidentally cut the patient's urinary channel before the outburst. A court awarded the unfortunate patient £20,000 to rebuild his penis from the hospital's insurance company and £100,000 in damages from the surgeon.
The damages award has been criticised by doctors across Romania who say that if insurance doesn't cover damages then they may all be forced to re-evaluate whether they can undertake any procedure that involves risk.
