Elevator Decapitates Teenager

A South African teen was decapitated by a goods elevator when he stuck his head inside to see why it wasn't working. The elevator suddenly began working, pinning the boy, and decapitating him.

Terrence Stadler, 17, had only been working in the Cape Town shopping centre for three days when the accident occurred. His brother Taswell, who was also working at the store, told reporters what was witnessed.

"The lift suddenly shot up and ripped his head open," he said. "I just heard shouting and screaming, and when I saw the woman covered in blood I knew my brother was dead."

Poor kid, now his brother's going to need some serious counselling.

  Sigh

This is what happens when you don't have proper safety measures. An elevator should not be able to move while the doors are open.

  Only three days

Yeah, sad it was only after three days... if only he had had a week or even a month ! It would not have been so unfair.

You guys shouldn't lose your heads over this one.

I mean come on! We all have to stick our necks out there sometime.

If only we were headed in the right direction in life things like this wouldn't happen.

  Strange?

I didn't know a country can enforce their laws on foreigners outside their borders just because their own citizens were invovled in something.

What are you talking about ? This story is about a South African who died in South Africa. What are these foreigners you're talking about (and what laws, anyway) ?

  Sad news to be sure.

However, after careful research on the subject, I cannot find so much as a single incident of anyone being killed while sticking their head into a blast furnace
to see if it is working properly.

Children, can you spell Darwin Award?

And how exactly were they going to figure out what was wrong with the elevator? Just stand around and hope that it started working again? I know neither one of you has probably actually had to fix anything but the truth is there are people out there who do have to do the work. Sadly for this young fella there was an accident.

  Now you know...

That is why you never stick your neck out to help anyone.

In fact, I am quite skilled at precision machining and I build my own computers.
I make my living working on nuclear submarines. What do you do?

The elevators I am familiar with will not permit opening doors if the elevator is in motion, or if it is not parked at a floor. Nor can the floor doors be opened under these circumstances.

Either mechanical failure, lack of installed safety interlocks, or plain stupidity killed that young man.
