Chinese Missile Blows Up Own Satellite, Tensions Rise

The Chinese have destroyed one of their own aging satellites orbiting more than 530 miles from the Earth by using a ground based missile in a demonstration of their anti-satellite technology.

The US and others criticized China for the move. The US stopped blowing up its own satellites in the 1980s, partially due to the large orbiting debris clouds that resulted from the practice. The test also highlights the US's vulnerability to anti-satellite weapons.

"American satellites are the soft underbelly of our national security," said
Rep. Edward Markey. Another remarked "The Chinese are telling the Pentagon that they don't own space."

  Nothing Like It

Taking down our government to a rational, sensible level is long overdue...we are not invincible as Iraq demonstrates...we are blow hards and avaricious killers.

  space weaponization

here we come...

  ...

The weapon used was ground based, not space-based.

As far as the event goes, they blew up one of their own satellites, why the big fuss?

This is mainly a countermeasure against US

projects such "full spectrum dominance" which includes space.

  haha

you have to laugh when people lay claim to things. you only own the land you live on through a thin layer of Bureaucracy that started as hereditary dominance.

i hereby claim space for all carbon lifeforms, any other lifeforms will have to get a b39 from the ministry of everything

  Thank you China

This will finally allow the USA to wake up and smell the napalm!

Don't mind me, i'm just agreeing with owlafaye

Now we have more space junk

Blowing the sat up just creates a million pieces in orbit going 24,000 miles an hour.

  I hate escalation.

I know this is supposed to be a countermeasure. But this is nevertheless another step towards escalation of the arms race.

(yeah, yeah, we do it too.)

  Backwards China.

WoW it took them 25yrs to catch the US. I dont think the US has anything to fear.

  @Drudge

lol, sure if that helps you sleep at night..

China are accellerating at a pace faster then the U.S right now, they have their shit together and arn't busy fighting 2 wars and pissing off extreemists, oh and im pretty sure they dont have a multi billion dollar national debt...granted their tech isn't on par with the U.S's right now, but they are a right behind them, and with thumping industrial power it wont take them very long at all as soon as they get their shit sorted. Think of russia with 1.1 billion more people and real tech and are allies/trading partners with basically all rich nations...

Sounds like a Warning Shot from China

telling the US that it will vaporize its satellites if caught loitering above Chinese territory. In a way it's good, as the US will not have a monopoly on satellite surveillance and it would not have to waste anymore money on the chimp's so-called "star wars shield", as it's been breached before completion.

  Zap~

Doesn't anyone remember that they recently tested a device to jam U.S. Satellites?

Consider that. There is as good of a chance in speculation as there is in coincidence.

  Has this

just crashed in Iran?

  by: AccessG     01/21/2007 06:46 AM
  Oh, boy...

China has just opened a Pandora's Box.

Regan's proposed Star Wars missle-defense system will soon become a reality, and ground based missles will be evaporated quicker than you can say "Poof!"

Does anyone seriously believe that the USA will allow their satellites to become compromised by a land-based missle system? We already have defense systems capable of intercepting most missles. Now we'll just have to deploy them into space.

  Hmm.. My thoughts

I do agree that China used this as a warning shot to America. But one thing that everyone should keep in mind is that most of China is in poverty. Also most of their military is concentrated in several large cities. It doesn't take much to destroy a nation when they're not spread out. A couple precision strikes can bring any nation to it's knees. (Even the US)

Although I agree America needs to look at this an learn from it, by either building a satellite defense system, or some other means of defense. I don't think everyone should be as quick to jump to.. "Ohhh America you should be SCARED!!" But we should raise an eyebrow and go oops.. forgot about that one.

Even when you're in war you don't pull out the big guns unless you have to. People are judging the US thinking they are using everything in their arsenal to fight our war(s). I can guarantee that we aren't. We didn't pull out the A bomb's in WWII until we had to. We wont pull out our next (Bomb, EMP, etc...) until we have to. The faster you pull it out. The faster everyone else wants one...My 2 cents...
