String Theory Possibly Ruled Out by Accelerator

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), due to be finished and running by the end of this year, may rule out the string theory. The particle offers new ways of testing the theory, something that scientists have so far been unable to achieve.

The LHC is a particle accelerator that could provide evidence of string theory through short-lived tiny black holes. Last year, Allan Adams from MIT said that specific particle collisions could show if underlying string theory assumptions were false.

The LHC will have the power to show these effects when it opens this year. String theory states that particles are actually miniscule, vibrating strings that account for every known force, including gravity.

i give up someone just tell me the answer...

good article

 by: pornohippy   02/05/2007 04:23 PM
I am not going to pretend

to know everything that the article was about but I have a little observation.
And before I do I would also like to say that I love science and am in awe of anyone who understands the complexities of quantum physics etc. I would like to beleive that the next big piece of the puzzle is just around the corner just waiting to be discovered

but so many of the most interesting scientific theories have been "debunked" recently. or so it would seem
Is reality not as interesting as we all imagine it to be? maybe we have discovered all that we are capable of discovering. its 2007 and it becomes more aparent that aliens don't exist, trips to Jupiter don't exist. there is no life on Mars, and further more no one cares, Flying cars don't exist. Quantum physics is still just a theory and doesn't seem to have any practicle application, the moon is just a rock, the center of the earth is just molten lava, Time travel is impossible. We are no further alond discovering the cure for cancer, or AIDS. Tesla's "ether" is not real. ( really if Tesla was really onto something do you not think we would have found it some 80 years later ), We as the human race have not evolved.

Anyway sorry for being pessemistic, I really really want to believe in this
but it would seem that reality is never as interesting as the human imagination

no crackpot religious responses please
but would someone ( anyone ) give me a little hope or reasurance ?

Quantum physics isn't "just a theory"

It has practical applications everywhere. Half the electronics that I work with are founded on the priciples of quantum theory. It's hardly a useless theory.

Seriouisly, the government is keeping secrets from the general public that they don't want anyone knowing about. There is everything that you mentioned, we just haven't found a way to create them yet. We are still technically in the dark ages (even though we are not).
Just look at Star Trek...

Interesting article..

Although im not physicist :P

Also...a typo on the thrid paragraph:

"account for ever known force,"

"ever" should be every.

"Is reality not as interesting as we all imagine it to be? maybe we have discovered all that we are capable of discovering."

We aren't at liberty to say with certainty what reality is

"its 2007 and it becomes more aparent that aliens don't exist"

What make you say that? We are only beginning to understand what the universe even does, is or was.

"trips to Jupiter don't exist."

True, but how can you walk on something that has no solid surface?

"there is no life on Mars, and further more no one cares"

Apart from these fossilised microbes that were inside a meteorite that came from Mars

"Flying cars don't exist"

http://www.urbanaero.com/
"Quantum physics is still just a theory and doesn't seem to have any practicle application"

The sun being the centre of our galaxy used to be just a theory once

"the moon is just a rock, the center of the earth is just molten lava"

"Time travel is impossible"

Isn't that just a theory? Gravity travels faster than light, so presumable anti-gravity travels faster than light. If it's possible to harness gravity/antigravity/darkmatter then you will travel faster that light, therefore time. Theoretically

"We are no further alond discovering the cure for cancer, or AIDS."

I'm pretty sure we understand much much more about these diseases/mutations than we ever were

"Tesla's "ether" is not real. ( really if Tesla was really onto something do you not think we would have found it some 80 years later )"

Teslas' Vril energy is widely believed to be variations of electromagnetism which we are experimenting with in the form of space tethers. http://en.wikipedia.org/
"We as the human race have not evolved"

Well there hasn't been much physical evolution since we developed steroscopic vision but our brains therefore our being has evolved by a massive factor.

Believe it or not, we're getting there. If you believe in Hindu Vedic cycle mythology we are now 5,107 years into the 432thousand final cycle. Finally we will restart the cycles again.

The whole of existence will last 311trillion years so.. best get some partying out of the way first :)

"the moon is just a rock, the center of the earth is just molten lava"

Yep the moon is just a rock, possibly made up of debrit from what is now the pacific ocean, thrown up from some ancient collision possibly.
Also the centre of the planet is very highly likely an enormously dense mixture of rock and iron.

Sorry for messy posting.. gets confusing with all these quotes :P

I can understand your pessimism, you're not alone. A lot of physicists actually decry string theory altogether, and worry that too many up-and-coming physics students are focusing their efforts on some aspect of the theory, rather than more established problems. Being a former physics major myself, I must say that being so closed-minded never helped the advancement of science. This theory is so new, and untested, that I would hold judgement until we start getting some solid numbers from these LHC experiments. There are plenty of examples through history where esteemed scientists were ultimately wrong about new theories that were later proven correct. Some of the theories put forward so far by string theory are so complex that we don't even have computers fast enough yet to put them to the test. And about the other things you mentioned, Mars is a work in progress, I still don't think we know enough to say for sure if life did or didn't exist. Cancer research has made amazing strides in the last ten years alone. Sure, a one-cancer-fits-all solution still eludes us, but we're constantly making progress. I would say to you, hang in there, there will be plenty of amazing discoveries in the next few years!

Black Holes- the quicker picker upper!

Is ANYONE ELSE concerned about 'tiny' black holes being generated on our planet?

 by: theironboard     02/05/2007 09:01 PM
  @ironboard

Don't worry about it. If one *is* created, we'll all be sucked into oblivion at speeds approaching light speed anyway. A death faster than a shotgun blast in the mouth.

Not at all, I've conversed with (and otherwise known) quite a few people who carry small black holes inside their skull..

 by: StarShadow     02/05/2007 09:07 PM
  no worries

noone should be concerned about the micro black holes created on earth.
The energies involved here are insignificant and these black holes would evaporate really quickly thru hawking radiation, they can't last more than a fraction of a second

Have you ever noticed that when you look into the ear of a black hole head you can see out the other side, but everything looks smaller and dimmer?

  I am constantly amused...

Some of you people are really hilarious for many various reasons.

Someone was correct when they said that the microsingularities are not to be concerned about. They have insufficient mass therefore insufficient gravity to actually pull anything into them.

I was constantly amused, sadly i'm not.

I had noticed that, but I just chalked it up to the gravitational forces causing my eyeball to distort..

Quantum Physics.

by: white albino   02/05/2007 10:40 PM
  disgustingly biased

anything "possible ruled out" implies testing has been done. In this case, its been done by something that has not yet had construction completed. I know in theory, its possible for particles to exist in two separate places at two separate points in time, AT the same time, but i dont think this can be extended to results of an experiment not yet carried out!

  And we all die

We're making black holes now? Great... I thought we'd last at least another hundred years. Guess not.

  "spooky action at a distance"

If they want to rule out string theory, they'll have to come up with a better explanation for entangled particles.

Dont worry about the black holes

My lecturer at Uni is involved with one of these projects at CERN. He rates the chances of total destruction to be "very small indeed".

It certainly reassured me... :-/

  Black Holes

Well according to current theories the black hole would dissapate before it could cause any harm. Which is probably the case. It just seems a little ironic to me that we are relying on an unproven theory to protect us while we try to prove another theory.
