Cheetah Mauls Woman to Death at Zoo

37-year-old Antwerp resident Karen Aerts was killed Sunday by cheetahs at the Olmense Zoo in northern Belgium after she entered their cage. She was part of a special program that allowed her to "adopt" a cheetah, and helped pay for its food.

That cheetah, named Bongo, was also involved in her death. Zoo spokesman Jan Libot said that "Karen loved animals. Unfortunately the cheetahs betrayed her trust." She was dead when employees discovered her in the cage.

They believe she found a hiding spot in the park and came out after they closed, located the keys to the cage and let herself in. An animal rights group says the zoo should be closed for good, citing dangers to both visitors and animals alike.

  yeah right
stop educating the public on wildlife because some loony thinks that paying for some food for a big cat will make it automaticially love you and not want to kill you when you enter its territory.

First of all the crazy chick hid until the park was closed then went into the cage and some animal rights group says it is unsafe? Umm HELLO the crazy chick went INTO the cages.

Second Bongo betrayed her trust? What the hell are they inhaling over there? Poor Bongo had no freaking clue that this insane chick was paying for his food. Did she expect a hug and a handwritten thank you note? She went into a cage with a dangerous animal people.

I love animals too, but that doesn't mean I am going to go to my local zoo and get in to play with the Lions FFS.

Betrayed? Good goddess!

Well, instead of paying for their food
she is their food. Now that's what I call commitment. I believe that all animal rights activists should follow her fine example.

I hope they do not kill the cheetah
for doing what it normally does in the wild.

The best I can say for this unfortunate woman is:

Intelligence is finite. There is no limit to stupidity.

Definately a Darwin Award!

A woman sneaks into the cheetah cage and it the cheetah's fault for killing her? Give me a break! I love animals too but I'm intelligent enough to know that not all animals are as tame and cuddly as they are often portrayed on TV and in movies. It's her own fault she got killed, not the zoo's and not the cheetah's. Personal responsibility seems to be a dead concept these days.

  What is wrongwith these people?
There was that lady in the Elephant enclosure a guy trying to pet lions and now this. I think I'll blame Disney seems like some people can't figure out the difference between cuddly cartoon animals and reality.

  An Award for Bongo
I think Bongo deserves an award for "thinning " the human herd of an incredibly stupid specimen. Hopefully, this woman did not have a chance to breed before Bongo put her out of her misery.

Hey, who says "cheetahs" never win, eh?

(I'm sorry for that. Very, very sorry.)

"(I'm sorry for that. Very, very sorry.)"

I would hope so ;)

  @Volkova Nova
Actually, I think your statement is quite eloquent, concise, and to the point.

Yes, the woman does deserve a Darwin Award.
