Primary School Students Making Coffin for Teacher Dying of Cancer

Students at a primary school in the Netherlands are constructing a coffin for Eri van den Biggelaar, a popular teacher at the school. 40-year-old van den Biggelaar was diagnosed with cervical cancer last year and probably only has weeks to live.

Initially she asked the arts and crafts teacher Erik van Dijk to build the coffin. He suggested she let the children make it. The students, who would normally be making place mats or baskets, have completed the coffin except for the lid.

Students visit the teacher in her home and give her progress reports. "Life and death belong together. The children realized that when I explained it to them. I didn't want to be morbid about it, I wanted them to help me," she said.

  hmmm...

I smell a batch of FRESH cookies who will learn to cope better with loss in their lives and thus have a meaninful one. I think this is great, I wish they taught everyone that death is as much part of life as anything else. may she pass with no pain and god bless her soul.

  hmm

i dont think its fair to the kids to be exposed to dire feelings for a year like that. the school should have gave her a years salary and let her go on vacation for the rest of her life. i would be kinda upset if i had to face someone i knew was going be dead all school year

  Oh get over it!

Death and life are something that come together. The sooner people realize how real death is the better off we'll all be. It's something these kids will learn sooner or later...might as well be someone close to them that will make them feel comfortable about it.

  Point being

You can hide yourself from reality as long as you like but its no ones responsibility to shelter you from it. This is not morbid, appalling, or taboo but beautiful that someone is sharing the rest of their life with people that love her.

I'm really sick of this it's your job to shelter my kids bull crap.

  Wonderful

I think it is a terrific showing of love and it is good to teach kids that they do not need to fear someone dying.

And as for the naysayers, well I bet that many would love to have a chance to tell someone goodbye if they knew they were passing. Death isn't a dirty secret we need to hide it is natural and we should show our children how to deal with it in a humane way.

  still kicking...

As a school dropout I don't have an inclination to like teachers. But this one is dying and the children are being so charming. I can make nice here. But in my kinda story they nail her into the box still kicking. Life and death belong together...
