Wikipedia Banned from Vermont College

Middlebury College in Vermont has banned online encyclopedia Wikipedia as a source for coursework submitted by its students. Wikipedia supports the move to ban it as a source, according to the Burlington Free Press.

Wikipedia allows anyone to alter its articles, which can lead to many mistakes when used as a source of information. Middlebury's history department said: "Wikipedia is not an acceptable citation, even though it may lead one to a citable source."

The Wikipedia Foundation said its service was an "ideal place to start, however it is not an authoritative source."

  AMEN!

If you can link to Wikipedia, you can also expend an extra two seconds of energy scrolling down to the bottom of a wiki-entry, where the footnotes are - if they link to authoritative sources, then *those* are what you cite.

Wiki 101, freshmen.

  in other news....

wikipedia has altered it's stance on the banning, but next hour it will be changed gain on the website hahahaha

....you gotta be an idiot to cite wikipedia in an article. I would laugh at someone if they used wikipedia as a source. Thats something you expect a 7th grader to do.

It's like how i only use wikipedia for birthdates and deathes. Everything else, questionable and i need links at the bottom of the page to believe.

  this is silly

What kind of post-secondary institution bans sources to prevent students from making the mistake of citing them? If a student cites a bad source then fail'em! Quite frankly, if you actually submit a paper with a source like Wikipedia then you're obviously not ready for that degree.

  Well yeah...

I haven't found any professor that allows Wikipedia to be used as a source. It's just common sense.

amen.

this is not wikipedia's problem or the vermont college's problem. this is the dastardly deed of the ubiquitous dumb student.

  ya blame the student...

You are blaming a student because he doesn't know better but I think you are forgetting we are not talking about a professional job, we are talking about an education system which is in place to teach the student the proper resources. If it was anybodies failure it was the teachers for not teaching them the right thing or letting them get away with it when they did it previously. Otherwise it would not be a large problem.

  sometimes

sometimes it doesn't matter how many teachers tell a student not to do something; they still do it.

so you're right, sometimes teachers are to blame, but largely a student should figure out that a source that they could have written themselves is not dependable. especially a college student.

  @kuhl

Yes, teachers should caution students, but by college students should have the skills to evaluate sources.

  banning...

I like a good banning. There's nothing as warm like the heat from a righteous book fire.

  I like Wikipedia!

Where else can I find info about my favorite rock bands, jet aircraft and other useless stuff! I have found many mistakes and found helpful info on states and other countries. I don't think I would do a term paper with it.

  @m.i.a.elite

The difference here is that when someone cites Wiki, you can quite easily see the source for the information. Citing it as a source here for instance is perfectly acceptable, in my opinion. Including "Wikipedia" in a source list for a formal report would hardly be sufficient.

"IN YOUR FACE"

I don't think so.

1. Who are you?

2. Citing wiki on SN is the exact same thing. Wiki is prone to errors. If someone is so lazy that they cant go to the bottom of a wiki and cite the real source they need to quit talking.
