Dr. Gary Merrill, a pediatrician in Bakersfield says he is turning away families if they have tattoos because it goes against his attempt at "creating a Christian atmosphere" for patients that do patronize his clinic. He makes it clear on the walls.
“This is a private office. Appearance and behavior standards apply," says one sign. He also turns parents away if they have piercings and other items he feels go against his faith. He also doesn't allow chewing gum.
Some patients that have tattoos do get treated, however. One doctor speaking on behalf of the AMA says any business reserves the right to refuse service, "be it a restaurant if they’re not dressed properly, be it any other type of business.”
