Man Found Dead After a Year; Still Watching His Blaring TV

70-year-old Hampton Bays resident Vincenzo Ricardo was found dead in his home, apparently from natural causes. Police found him after someone reported a broken water pipe at his residence. His body was sitting in front of a TV, still on.

Morgue assistant Jeff Bacchus said "You could see his face. He still had hair on his head," adding that his body was preserved from the low humidity in his house.

Not having any contact with anyone since December 2005, authorities had no answer as to why his power was still on. When asked, the neighbors just assumed he was in a long-term facility or a hospital; he suffered from blindness and diabetes.

  Yikes

The horror of that discovery!

It's a good advert for that brand of TV though. "It will out-live you!"

  Bills

Sounds like direct deposit from his SS/Pension/etc checks.

Nice neighbors, to assume nothing is wrong and all ..... for over a year.

Old man on my block walks every day, didn't see him a few days last summer, went to inquire - turns out he had passed on. Made his wife cry, she said all the neighbors had come to ask about him becasue we didn't see him.

The first thing that came to my mind was

Why was the power still on??? Second of all, didn't the Post Office notice something was wrong??? My friend is a letter carrier and this would have set off an alarm that mail was piling up, it doesn't mater if you live in a house or an apartment, the mail box or slot can just hold so much. When this happens to my friend he checks to see if there are any forwards or stopped mail, if not he alerts his supervisor that something is wrong. So that is another service that didn't seem to care. Sure he was blind, but blind people still get mail. did this person have any family? Was this a house or an apartment? The source doesn't say, if it was a house, wouldn't the grass be 10 feet tall at one point last year?

  Poor Old Guy

Being he was still upright in the sitting position and died of natural causes, it seemed like he went pretty peacefully doing what he enjoyed, watching his favorite I love lucy reruns.

If they would have found him 10 minutes after he passed away or 5 years, he still would have kicked the bucket anyways. Whats with all the drama queen comments...?

One year is nothing. I remember years ago in grade 9, my english teacher told me of someone he knew that died, and was found 5 years later in front of his tv. They were able to determine it was 5 years because he was holding a tv guide in his hands.

I guess he had auto payment on all his bills, and when his account was bled dry, they went into evict the so called 'bum tenant' only to find that gruesome discovery.

@_@

As for this guy, it sounds like he had a landscaping crew come by once a week to cut the grass, shovel the snow. Assuming he lived in a house that is.

Drama Queen comments?

You are correct that finding him 10 minutes or 5 years later wouldn't bring him back to life. Dead is dead. Your thinking is a little off-center though. The fact is that no one cared enough about him to check on his well-being. That's a sad, lonely existence.

  anybody ever think...

....that maybe nobody checked up on him....because they didn't like him???

Maybe he was that old man who yelled at you to turn your music down, and to stay off his lawn. He could have been severely anti-social. A lot of people don't really get mail, and he more than likely did everything direct deposit wise.

It's always good to think the other way then just read and go "OH, SOMEONE SHOULD HAVE CHECKED ON HIM...."
