US Soldier - 100 Years. Iraqi Girl – Life

24-year-old Sgt Paul Cortez was given a dishonourable discharge from the US Army and handed a 100 year prison sentence for his part in the gang rape and murder of 14-year-old Iraqi girl Abeer Qassim al-Janabi.

The girl's parents and younger sister were also murdered in the assault by US troops. Cortez described the scene of Pvt. Steven Green raping the girl, then shooting her father, mother and sister before shooting her in the head.

According to terms of a plea agreement, Cortez can be out in as little as 10 years for testifying against his fellow murderers. In a statement to the judge, Cortez apologized for the pain and suffering he caused the al-Janabi family.

  most interesting about this

Most interesting thing about this is if you watch the coverage it got in the US media she was a "young woman" and not a child when the story broke and despite being picked up on this fact by FAIR.org .. most of the major US media outlets continued to call her a "young woman " for quite some time .

If the soldiers were working for Blackwater they would have just been pulled from Iraq and it would have ended there .(as has already happened)

prison or military prison? military prison is a tad bit harsher so he should do the 100 years there, if not an iraqi prison

  I hope I hope

I do hope this will dissuade any soldier from killing anyone...might they ALL defy orders.

In a war you can't be convicting your soldiers for murder, rape or pillage...war is war.

Of course, Bush made this what it is for oil not conquest.

I'd like to take this opportunity

to profoundly thank the US government and military
for protecting us all from The Terrorists. You know
The Terrorists, right? Those small bands of men,
armed by wealthy backroom players, who are bent
on destroying individuals' lives in such horrifying
ways as to strike fear and submission into the
hearts of their countrymen. The ones who pursue
goals of pure evil and hatred against others, just
because they are different in some respect. Thank
God Almighty we have The US to protect the world
from The Terrorists.

I'm not sure if you noticed, or it was intentionaly.

That comment was remarkably ironic.

  Those Sex Starved Perverts ...

will be out be out within 10 years, just proves how the american government likes to be seen punishing its soldiers for horrific war crimes, whereas in reality it is handing out very lenient sentences for crimes that would normally deserve the electric chair or death by lethal injection. I say send them to the frontlines, maybe Baghdad even, since he would be most likely to cross paths with "Juba the Baghdad Sniper" who can pick off a lowlife scum nobody really cares about, instead of the average marine out doing his duty.

FYI this is Juba's widely circulated video >>> http://tinyurl.com/...

  disgusting

Instead of letting him go free for tattling, they should have just offered him five "get out of one daily beating free" tokens. Seriously, I wish these guys had just been executed. A person who would rape and kill an innocent girl and her family have no business being alive at all.

Hmmm, well, let me answer that with an invitation
to the forum. Either in writing that, I'm bitterly
ironic, or I'm hopelesly naive in not seeing the
irony. I'll give you a clue: I'm a Canadian. Forum, I
leave it in your hands to determine which my
country is generally more prone to: bitter irony or
hopeless naivety. To make it more interesting,
please leave your contry of residence with each
vote. I'll tally them up after a bit and tell you which
perspective I was writing from. :)

It reminds me of WW2 and the japanese attacks in china. They would take a town and for over a week, Kill the men, Rape the women and "Children", then kill them too. This happened many times and it was "Official" policy that was there to keep the soldiers happy and fighting. Nary a war crime was ever charged but there were 2 judgements dropped that bought it all to an end and then the world decided to meet in geneva and come up with some rules about such things and why they can not happen again. People it was the US millitary that made that possible. Are you folks so young that these facts were forgotten? These men who did this to a child and her family betrayed everything we stand for and everything every US warrior ever fought to end. When the rest of the world fell to hitlers bombs and japans numbers like cowards it was the US soldier that paid the price to bring the peace we all have grown too comfortable and egocentric in. These men should be judged and given to the families of the girl to deal with themselves. We should build a monument of a Pig over their ashes in downtown baghdad with urinals on all sides. Never forget the others they tarnished. They are not the enemy. Every man is his own responsibility and these few should not even be called soldiers, they threw that noble privlidge aside.

  Plea Bargaining

is just one of the many things that's wrong with the American justice system. Who wouldn't lie about what happened to get 90 years taken off your sentence?!
