Eleven people have died at the annual kite festival called Basant, a weekend that celebrates spring, in eastern Pakistan. The festival involves firing guns into the air, and some of those killed were hit by stray bullets.
Some 500 were injured during the festival. People were also sliced with the kite wires and some were injured or killed when their kite wires were caught up in electrical wires. Six of those killed over the weekend were children.
Basant has been banned by Pakistan's supreme court owing to previous fatalities. The provincial government in Punjab lifted the ban for the weekend. Over 800 people were arrested.
