11 Killed at "Basant" Kite Flying Festival

Eleven people have died at the annual kite festival called Basant, a weekend that celebrates spring, in eastern Pakistan. The festival involves firing guns into the air, and some of those killed were hit by stray bullets.

Some 500 were injured during the festival. People were also sliced with the kite wires and some were injured or killed when their kite wires were caught up in electrical wires. Six of those killed over the weekend were children.

Basant has been banned by Pakistan's supreme court owing to previous fatalities. The provincial government in Punjab lifted the ban for the weekend. Over 800 people were arrested.

Sounds like a world class party
Sounds like a world class party
When was the last time you went to a party and 11 people died just flying kites. That is some serious kite flying. These people know how to party. I have never even met anyone that subsequently died kite flying. I may be to old to run with the bulls but I can still fly a kite.

what can I say other than WTF!
"Let's shoot bullets in the air and wait for them to fall!"
"Why not kite around those electrical wires?"
Reminds me of that scene in the movie Ghost Ship...

  It didn't help
They should outlaw the wire used before and allowed string only, but how much fun would kite flying be unless people died?
