Are Ebay's Listing Numbers Inflated by Fraud?

Ebay Inc's (NASDAQ:EBAY) listing numbers have demonstrated dramatic volatility during the 'Vladuz' security scare. Some Ebay users have suggested that the millions of fraudulent listings are significantly inflating Ebay's listing numbers.

In response, an Ebay spokesperson claims: "there just isn't enough information there to tie the swings in listings that they show to any one cause". They declined to comment as to the number of accounts that may have been compromised.

It is also suggested that Medved's calculations for Ebay's total of listing numbers are overestimated too. As the Ebay spokesperson confirms, the Medved statistics used to quantify Ebay's listing numbers "far exceed our real activity in this area".

  Inflation is rife

... and not just in Third World economies.

Seems to me that ebay are running around like headless chickens right now. Maybe they should come chat with 'Vladuz' here http://pheebay.com/
I bet he could tell us how to seperate out the numbers, in fact he might even oblige by accessing the true figures and posting them for us all to read.

  Tick Tock

eBay has been playing with their numbers for a very long time... This is just their newest "scam", IMO... Anyone remember sellers' sold items mysteriously relisting themselves???

  Hrm

It's been awhile since we've had a hacker running around breaking things.

Ebay's refusal to comment on anything doesn't really help the matter...

Do we really need to ask?

LadyD - I remember, and had that happen in our store. Items relisted that had been sold months before, and me spending hrs looking for them, thinking I'd lost them (or my mind). eBay turned into a money and time waster for us!

The security issues are just more symptoms of their "blind monkeys" (hear/see/speak no evil) - they are real threats to people doing real business. As long as they hide behind their "just a venue" curtain, the problems will never be solved. Well, that, and as long as sellers continue to pay them the big bucks for shoddy service....

  eBay IS fraud!

eBay has so much fraudulent activity, unfair pricing, and just ALL KINDS of crazy stuff that goes on there. They don't care about fraud or if their customers get ripped off, as long as they make their money. -My opinion, only... don't sue me eBay...

Wow, this scammer will help the Q1 numbers!

http://digg.com/
The worst thing about the linked article, is that eBay REMOVED the discussion board post about their incompetence! With 57,000+ scam auctions, running for hours, how many users were scammed?
