Church leaders from the island nation of Tobago are pushing to have Sir Elton John banned from visiting, citing fears that he could use his influence to turn locals gay. The singer is booked to play at the Plymouth jazz festival in April.
"His visit to the island can open the country to be tempted towards pursuing his lifestyle," said Phillip Isaac, Archdeacon of Trinidad and Tobago. Isaac also stated that he wanted to 'save' Sir Elton from his lifestyle.
The number of calls made to a local radio station suggest that many residents are against the star visiting. Organisers insist the concert will go ahead. "We should be honoured… This is a man who was knighted by the Queen," said an official.
