58-year-old Sausalito resident Mark Anderson faces multiple charges in connection with the intentional destruction of 6 million bottles of wine, whose estimated worth was between $200-250 million. Charges include mail fraud, arson and tax evasion.
He is alleged to have burned down the warehouse south of Napa to cover his scam, in which he stole fine wine from upscale clients. 92 different wineries lost inventory in the fire.
Prosecutor Steven Lapham: "As high as it sounds, a conservative estimate is $200 to $250 million and insurance estimates put it even higher than that. It does seem staggering, but that's a lot of wine."
