Many people fled to high grounds when a devastating tsunami was created due to a powerful earthquake occurring nearby. The storm left 28 people dead.
The earthquake reached a magnitude of 8.1 on the Rehctar Scale creating the tsunami whose waves reached up to 30 feet high. The waves crashed into several of the South Pacific islands, including the Solomon Islands.
Some of the victims killed were a bishop and three worshippers. Also a man from New Zealand drowned while he was attempting to save his mother. His mother remains missing.
