Possibility of Women Growing Their Own Sperm in Lab

Research aimed at overcoming infertility has managed to convert human bone marrow into immature sperm. Professor Nayernia of the University of Newcastle in Britain led a team which took male bone marrow and isolated adult stem cells.

These stem cells can turn into a variety of tissues. The scientists nutured them in a culture containig vitamin A from which grew the immature sperm cells.

"Our next goal is to see if we can get the spermatogonial stem cells to progress to mature sperm in the laboratory," stated the professor. This research may allow two women to have their own biological daughter.

This has already been tried and tested
on lab mice, the eggs were fertilized by the artificial sperm produced from blank cells taken from bone marrow. The result was the mice had very weak immune systems and died prematurely. Here's a tip, stop messing with stem cells and the human body, couples should be left to reproduce the natuaral way. The consequences of using this method for reproduction purposes could be catastrophic for the human race with mass mutations and the spread of more deadly diseases which would be hard to cure, why fix it, if it ain't broke?

Well people who are infertile are "Broken" or so you say. Just because this failed in mice doesn't mean we should just abandon the idea. Some more experimentations will probably necessary but thats the beauty of science. I think your going a little overboard on this super-virus, genetic mutation talk but thats just my opinion.

  mass mutations
pretty unlikely unless you have a severe -SEVERE- decrease in the amount of people producing naturally, which won't happen unless there already is a catastrophe... at which point ethics are null.

so they might add mutations to the gene pool, thats how genetic diversity works. we already are diverse enough as a race that evolution for humans has slowed dramatically

Gives new meaning to the phrase "Go f__k yourself"

  First vibrators
and now women can make their own sperm?!?! Next thing you know they'll be driving, voting, and owning land. J/K

I can't quite put my finger on it but something just doesn't seem right about this.

Men seem to be on the way out, thats not cool.

  It will help
man that cant have children, but two woman having a child? this is going to be confusing, i see a big lesbo + gay population coming in the near future, is it wrong? I believe it is, the natural way is untouchable no matter what humans create to replace true love.
  by: unitybeing   04/16/2007 12:47 PM
why do you forsee a big gay population?
  by: Gogevandire   04/16/2007 12:56 PM
  i wonder
how will this affect our genome system?

it might have bad effects
  by: m.i.a.elite     04/16/2007 03:49 PM
is going to WANT to use this method.
its really a last resort.
or if you're a lesbian.

but goge its not like we don't already have test tube babies. men arent going anywhere.
  by: hamstertube   04/16/2007 04:24 PM
unless things have changed radicaly, you still need sperm.
This would be the radical change.

I'm curious how this would work in regards to cloning?
  by: Gogevandire   04/16/2007 04:33 PM
  probably too expensive.
Just say this ends up being successful, who would be able to afford it anyway? correct me if im wrong, but i was under the impression that to have in virto fertilization costs tens of thousands of dollars? I'm sure this sort of technology would be more expensive.
  by: msavelloni   04/16/2007 05:23 PM
Because of the diversification of the genetic material once the process of spermatogenesis begins and ends the offspring would not be 100% identical but it would be damn close.

I don't see this causing any mutations especially if you have a healthy egg cell. If the stem cell is just maturing by chemicals introduced to its environment that simulate the process of sperm production then the nucleus is not actually mechanically manipulated such as in cloning procedures.

Being a stem cell indicates that it is has not had any of genetic material locked away as happens in mature cells. So everything would be there just like in a real person.

Sorry for the tidbits but its better than writing paragraphs.

  If we can perfect this
Will we really have a need for men any more?
  by: Valkyrie123     04/16/2007 08:37 PM
  Awwee Valk
Would you really like to live in a world without men? Who will be there to frustrate us to no end, annoy us to death, make our lives miserable and happy all at the same time. Make us melt with sadness and laughter, and generally turn our day inside out all the time? I cannot live without my man because he makes my life interesting! Mushy Mushy talk sighs...

I've got a good question for you, would war exist if men didn't?
  by: kuhl   04/17/2007 01:51 AM
We're doomed!

Can we just get them all fixed so they are easier to manage. This war business has got to end.
  by: Valkyrie123     04/17/2007 07:06 PM
  @ Valk
I'm with you now where do we go to get them 'fixed'
  by: sleeky     04/17/2007 10:34 PM
is interesting, the only down side to it, is that, mens bone marrow is needed to produce and not his boner..

For once size wont matter. Woop Woop.

If this gets anywhere, I think Women will drive themselves to extinction. After all men are dead and no more marrows to harvest. Houston We Have a problem.
