Surge Has Failed Says UN Assistance Mission for Iraq

The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq said today that sectarian violence continued to claim the lives of a large number of civilians despite the surge but could not comment on overall mortality figures from Iraq as the government refused to release them.

UNAMI stated that “While government officials claimed an initial drop in the number of killings in the latter half of February following the launch of the Baghdad security plan, the number of reported casualties rose again in March.”

The latest report by the UN on the situation in Baghdad also states that American troops are facing “increasing danger” in Baghdad and areas surrounding the city since the beginning of the surge security operations.

  Failed? What?
We provide Al Qaeda with a new home, give them all the PR goodwill they could ever hope for, and even sent them more targets to shoot at and they failed to capitalize on this windfall. You just can’t depend on anyone any more.
