Akon's Antics with Adolescent Sparks Anger & Apology
Recent Hip Hop Music Success story Akon is in hot water for dirty dancin' with an underaged partygoer at a Trinidad nightclub. A video of the performance, simulating various sexual positions, has been widely circulated on the Internet.
Akon, 34, has issued an apology to the girl, her family and the Trinidad community for the embarrassment caused. Akon also admitted that he had no idea she was underaged.
IMHO teens in general spend alot of time trying to grow up too fast: fake IDs, dressing older, flirting their way into otherwise off-llimit establishments. This happens often, and its never news. Other news outlets report that this girl is a preacher's daughter and its soooo unfair. Not saying it's right, or saying she deserves to be treated this way (please don't jump to conclusions) BUT If you've seen the video..this girl doesn't act like a 15 yr old innocent victim.
If your in a nightclub with security at the door checking the ages then it should be safe to think everyone is the correct age. I'd hate to wake up next to a girl and for her to say 'omg Im late for school' ... well unless it was like college or summit ... Trainspotting anyone?
That’s enough for me. They should be forced to wear a sign to protect the innocent….and the guilty. I hate a generalization as much as the next girl, but why is it that preacher’s daughters are all alike? Lets get real folks, when I looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck it’s time to accept the fact…
Maybe we need better laws against minors impersonating adults and frequenting night clubs to protect the adults. I don’t see minors pulling stunts like this as anything close to innocent. Maybe we need a new rallying cry for the ditto-heads, “But what about the adults!”
I hate when sometimes adults get blamed for a young teenager acting like an adult.
Some guy looking for 15 year olds on the internet is plain nasty, but what in the heck is hte 15 year old doing online looking for older men and talking dirty.
At that point I don't see a victim, I see an accomplice.
I was watching a show that disgusted me interviewing a now "18" year old who at 15 would go online looking for older men and have them come over and have sex with them.
She was the one looking to get with an older man to fill some need for love. She said she was a victim.
BULL you are a victim cause you got caught by your dad! Now magically you realize the error of your ways. The thing about her is she had done it half a dozen times with differant men she invited over.
I'm sure all the other Sophmores/Juniors thought she was a victim.....more like the local slut.
Where is the accoutability. In the Akon video the girl is dancing really nasty. She is acting like an adult.
Akon should not be under such fire other than the fact he is adding to the degradation of women in the first place and being a dirty filthy, immoral man.
But this story shouldn't be substantiating evidence. If he KNEW that the girl was not of age, and this sort of behavior went on THEN I could see labeling him...but not like this....not like this.
The age of consent in Trinidad is 16. All this guy was doing was dirty dancing and simulating sex. Sure that is inappropriate in light of the fact she was 14, but I very much doubt the girl looked 14. Let us also remember that this happened on stage. It was not like he drugged her and dragged her back to his dressing room to rape her.
I guess my question is what is a 14 year old girl doing at a concert like this without some kind of supervision.
Most parents or society put an emphasis on the supervision of its minors ...anywhere. They just point the fingers and start blaming once the spit hits the fan.
Theres a link to the video if anyone was curious. It's pretty obvious that she knew EXACTLY what she was doing, and you wondered why theres such thing as teenage pregnancy!
how much older(care to share)...? In L.A. before I left 15 yr olds can have a striking resemblance to 24 yr olds, a surprising few can even talk the talk.
Did you actually see the video? From the description I figured it was just some humping, but even I was offended by it. That's called sexual assault in several countries. I'm not sure this would be an issue if what he did wasn't so ridiculously over the top.
Plus, what the hell does this have to do with music?
2 consenting adults can do much more than the video showed. This girl was assumed to be a consenting adult. If you don't know what this has to do with the music...I can't imagine that you've heard 'Smack That'...I have'nt but I figure there must be some relation. I've seen a few live concerts with people more mild-mannered than Akon and some of their concert antics includes beds with leather ties and whips.....the crowds (like in the Akon vid) go wild!
I think you're all assuming you know everything about the situation, when we only saw a small portion of the video.
She most likely wanted to get up on stage, but I highly doubt she anticipated what happened next. From the video, you can tell that he's manhandling her and not paying attention to her at all, and it's not a stretch at all to imagine that if she wanted him to stop he probably wouldn't have even noticed.
I'm not saying the guy should be arrested, I'm just saying I understand the outrage. Not to mention the fact that it's a sad statement on the music industry in general... this is what qualifies as "art" nowadays?
I mean the hip hop in my day was Dr. Dre and Snoop Dog, this crap makes that look like Shakespeare.
I agree with you, it looks like we got ourselves a FOX CNN standoff... I think that this girl was probably third in a line and wanted to shake what her momma gave her and be the big cheese at school on Monday She could've thought she was going to be treated like a lady by a guy on stage with no shirt and things just went awry unbeknownst to her... either are possible. I'm not judging either way. We know how pre-judging works....ask the Duke Lacrosse Team
Trust me, I'm a CNN guy... I'm just a CNN guy who thinks this guys went a bit too far. I'm not making a judgment as to what should happen to him, I'm just saying that it offends me to watch that... and as someone who has seen a lot of low-budget horror films from the 70's and 80's, THAT'S HARD TO DO.
Hip hop used to be about social issues and coming out of the ghettos and the anger these men were feeling.
Hip hop today is about bootie and bling bling, glorifying living like a thug and a lavish lifestyle with no actual sense of being a success, like getting a job or a career. It keeps people poor and having this idea of wealth they do not have.
It glorifies stupidity and being a thug.
Tight beats though, but the message is of utter ignorance.
I hear ya, and that's kinda my point. I'm the Fox guy. But Fox proponents say it's unbiased as CNN proponents say the same for CNN. Here's the basic facts: an underaged girl was filmed in a sexual dance display with a known performer. Either side will hardly ever leave it at this; we want to know why so we begin to assume based on inner-biases. I don't think it's always malicious intent but none the less, human nature.
That's why 'gangsta rap' sales have been plummeting over recent years. I must admit, I graduated from Dominguez High in Compton, and when the initial thing started it was new and exciting, now it's just old and tired. We need a new movment like how Digital Underground came on the scene and stole a bit of thunder from the pro black radical move and things were just fun Or De La Souls 'Daisy age' with smooth clever innuendo. REAL ART.
