An underwater golf tournament, believed to be a world first, has been staged at the Zuohai Aquarium in Fuzhou city, Fujian province. Five competitors took part in the event which took place at the bottom of a fifty-foot tank.
Hazards of the new style of play include marine wildlife and water currents which can make the ball behave unpredictably. The winner is determined based on who gets the ball in the hole in the shortest time rather than in the least number of shots.
"The water makes the match very interesting. Not only fish and mammals distract the players, but their buoyancy makes it hard for them to stabilise themselves," an aquarium spokesperson told local media.
