The LA Roman Catholic archdiocese has announced it will be selling its main office building to raise money from lawsuits resulting from the sexual abuse of young parishoners at the hands of Catholic priests.
The LA archdiocese is the largest in the United States and, in December, it settled 46 abuse cases worth some US$60 million. However, another 500 cases are still in litigation, and have been over an umber of years.
Cardinal Roger Mahony said: "Though it has always been the position of the archdiocese that the insurance companies must honour their responsibility to fund a major share of future settlements, the archdiocese must be prepared to fund its share."
