LA Roman Catholic Church Selling Buildings to Settle Sex Suits

The LA Roman Catholic archdiocese has announced it will be selling its main office building to raise money from lawsuits resulting from the sexual abuse of young parishoners at the hands of Catholic priests.

The LA archdiocese is the largest in the United States and, in December, it settled 46 abuse cases worth some US$60 million. However, another 500 cases are still in litigation, and have been over an umber of years.

Cardinal Roger Mahony said: "Though it has always been the position of the archdiocese that the insurance companies must honour their responsibility to fund a major share of future settlements, the archdiocese must be prepared to fund its share."

  Wow

I didn't know you get insurance for molesting children and the court resulting from that.

To know this and to know that those poor bastards in New Orleans have to strugle to get a few pennies back from their insurance companies sounds rather familiar to me.

  OK

I'm calling on an admin to delete evilrat's comment -- that's hate speech.

Freedom of speech, get over it.

In my own opinion I think it a perfectly valid response to the article.

  valid response?

hardly, but he does have the right to say it. his comment shouldn't be deleted, but generalizations should be recognized and pointed out as the ignorant reactionary comments that they are. i also don't think i'd go so far as to call it hate speech.

  I can't understand...

Why the church has to pay for this?

If a paedophile worked as an IT consulter and would the IT firm have to pay out?

I know there's moral grounds as what he is recognised, but i still don't think the church should be paying for it.

Not that i'm religious in any way...

  Damn

I was hoping they were selling some churches - always wanted one of those.

Dook: "Why the church has to pay for this?"

My guess is because part of the whole molestation scandal is that the church was aware of it and covered for it, thusly facilitating the crimes.

  errr....

and here i am still waiting for them to tax all churches equally or tax no churches at all... perferably all churches, as generally only minority religions have to pay taxes on their land.

as for this case, would be a nice change to see pedo preists behind bar rather than relocated as the vaticans likes to do with them.

personally religious corruption is eve more sickinging than political corruption... comming from politicians its almost to be expected... comming from people that are supposed to be followers of the faith and living by "gods" word speaks volumes of the charater of these people and in thusly as representivives of their religion are speaking of the character of the religion they are representing... similarly bush represents conservatives but by no means is bush actually conservative...

and btw before anyone jumps on this i'm not trying to turn this into a bush debate... i just thought it would be a clear example that we can call readily see.

  @Dook

I'm gonna assume the reason why they have to pay is because many of the upper people knew that this was going on.
They still kept the people that did it in their positions and those people continued to molest kids.

Thats what i know anyways....

  wonder

Why the Vatican doesn't let loose the purse strings since they back the priests and wont do anything about this. Instead of making the local diocese's having to foot the bill.

I am willing to be these suits are just like the McMartin day care crap and the other molestation charges, about one in a hundred are true.

Actually, I would think by now you would be expecting this - if you aren't then you're either deluding yourself, or slow on the uptake. ANY large heirachial organisation is going to experience corruption - be it the police, politics, teachers, et al.

So you hold politicians - who are ostensibly elected to represent the will of the people, and run the country on behalf of the people - to a lesser standard than those who profess that they believe in some God that you've no intention of ever accepting, much less believe in?

A politician professes integrity, honor, fairness et al all the time in their campaign and public appearances - why is this different in any shape to people who profess to follow a moral standard in their lives?

The worst* thing that can happen, is the LA diocese goes bankrupt.
If the vatican steps up, catholocism could go bankrupt.

*for catholics.
