Zimbabwe's Inflation Climbs to 3,721.9%

In yet another sign of the economic crisis that has gripped Zimbabwe, the country's inflation has climbed 3,721.9% after being driven higher by a falling currency and spiraling prices.

The figure is a significant jump from last month's inflation figure of 2,200%. Experts predict that things will only get worse as the prices of fuel, food, electricity, and transport continues to spiral out of control.

The country is experiencing bread and flour shortages and insufficient stores of fuel and fertilizer have meant that only 10% of the winter wheat crop has been planted. The country will also have to import maize because of poor domestic production.

All this while Mugabe lives in a lavish marble mansion. If there was ever a reason to take out a dictator, that reason is in Zimbabwe and Sudan, not Iraq and Iran.

But he freed Zimbabwe from those evil white rhodesians....

Oddly enough, I agree, and a liberation and reconstruction of Zimbabwe would probably work too.

It could still be done.

sarcasm? i remembered you saying that genocide and slavery are none of our business and that you're against direct intervention.

I am.
It doesnt mean I cant agree this is a better case for regime change though.

I couldnt care less wether 75% of the population starves and the rest flees, nothing to do with me.
Doesnt mean I cant point out that, if you think Sadam needing removing, surely you'd go for this guy first.

You know, one day, through no fault of your own, YOU might wake up as the one with AIDS, or the one being prosecuted and hunted down for your beliefs. How will you feel then?

This has been posted on SN before:

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

good attempt, but there's no need to care about someone who only cares about himself. you're just wasting energy on a lost cause. leave him in a hall of mirrors and he's got all he'll ever need.

Agreed,

For once the "liberation"(invasion) of a country can be justified. I'm actually disgusted at our country's(South Africa) attitude towards Zimbabwe. We should start playing more active role in Africa, starting with ousting that dictator. Unfortunately our government is quite passive and war is the last thing on our mind. Here are some quotes:

"But South Africa's brief debut this year on the U.N. Security Council has tattered its reputation. It has prompted human rights activists to condemn South African President Thabo Mbeki for abandoning the human rights principles that defined the anti-apartheid movement and for routinely siding with some of the world's worst human rights abusers. In just over three months, South Africa has used its position on the 15-nation council to try to block discussion of human rights abuses in Burma and Zimbabwe." - http://www.washingtonpost.com/
It would appear that South Africa is keeping the situation local(Africa) and doesn't want the UN security council's intervention stating: "South Africa's U.N. ambassador, Dumisani Kumalo, said his government remains faithful to the values of the anti-apartheid movement, which offered amnesty to the country's former white rulers in exchange for publicly describing their roles in perpetuating a system of racial discrimination. He said South Africa has now embraced a pragmatic foreign policy that urges such countries as Burma, Sudan and Zimbabwe to resolve their disputes through negotiations."

"Kumalo said his government is seeking to counter "an imbalance of global power" in the U.N. Security Council, where he said the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China use their authority to attack enemies and to shield friends. The council should stick to resolving international conflicts and not abuse its role by bullying small countries or expanding its authority into areas beyond its jurisdiction, including human rights, he said. Kumalo said that his government's hesitation to embrace Kosovo's independence bid reflects South Africa's concern that the 15-nation council is straying from its mission."

I don't know if this is what he truly believes, but at least he seems to be fighting the good fight.

I don't believe Mugabe can be reasoned with and he should be brought down before more people suffer. It's quite clear his administration has no idea how to address the undermining issues of his country, he really can't blame it on the international community or "white devils", South Africa came from the same background and is prospering. At least the South African president(Thabo Mbeki) is actually getting involved: "I can confirm that the discussions are proceeding very well," Mbeki, who was delegated by the Southern African Development Community to mediate the talks, told Parliament in Cape Town." What will come from these talks only time will tell, unfortunately. Anyway, just my opinion on this subject.

or the one being prosecuted and hunted down for your beliefs. How will you feel then?

I'm curious as to why the way to avoid this is to persecute any who dont believe as I do.

I dont think printing new bank notes is the way to solve economic problems, zimbabwe disagree.
What happens in zimbabwe is nothing to do with me.

 by: GogeVandire   05/19/2007 04:57 PM

You can't avoid something you can't see coming, or refuse to acknowledge.

Acknowledging the possibility that one day it COULD be you (generalized) encourages those people to (sometimes) take action in attempt to make sure it won't happen. In the end, those efforts help the world a little bit at a time.

those are hollow humanitarian efforts.
at least goge's honest

Ah yes, criticize those who make hollow attempts while defending those who make none at all.

Brilliant.

  Whats the difference between

Invading Zinmbabwe and replacing itas givernment and invading Iraq and replacing its government?

I disagree with what Zimbabwe does, but Bush disagreed with what Iraq did.
If you believe your right and the world must accept your will or die, fine, good for you, but your rather more like the heartless monsters Bush and Mugabe than I am.

 by: Gogevandire   05/21/2007 10:09 AM
  @mav

what you essentially said is that people need to be shown how the issue will affect them before they will take any action against it.
which is exactly what goge is saying of himself. so really, you two should be in agreement :p
i'm not criticizing any efforts made by anyone to help better the world, but i am however criticizing the fake concern for others that all too often accompanies those efforts.
which is why im defending goge.
hes not putting on a mask.

  I miss the good old days

In the past we would have had some rich businessman hire a crack team of merc's to go in, take him out and replace him with someone more "malleable".

Bit like Iraq but not government sanctioned.

Obviously Cheney has Haliburton installing and running the printing presses......
So how long until someone cries foul and says the US should do something about this?
I feel like someone wants to say it, come on you can do it...

  sucks to live in Africa

Is it just me or is Africa the suckiest place to live?

If you have a ruler and a stable government it's corrupt and the people starve however the alternative is guerilla warfare and chopped hands and legs off and child warriors.

The other part is there is no need for it. It could have a rich economy based on it's natural resources, from Diamonds, to agriculture, to uranium, oil all kinds of natural products. Yet they are either super poor or super rich.

But at the same time I think the whole world will soon be in that state, US is not immune to those conditions, I think Africa just got there first.

There are actualy a few pretty wealthy african nations.
The problems in Zimbabwe, and most african nations, are completely preventable, but what do you expect when you expel the most productive members of your society.
