Little League Coach Sued by Parent for Bad Coaching

Jean Gonzalez is suing Little League coach Leigh Bernstein, the New Springville Little League and Little League Baseball and Softball Inc. over an incident in which her son was seriously hurt sliding into second base.

The lawsuit alleges that the boy wasn't taught how to slide properly and that as a result he suffered "serious bodily injury" leaving "permanent scarring and disability." The league and parents have expressed shock and dismay at the litigation.

"I've been coaching for over 20 years, and have instructed players in the various skills required to play baseball, including sliding. Unfortunately, injuries happen. That's part of the game," said Bernstein.

  permanent scarring and disability?

What? Did he slide, trip forward, and land on his neck permanently paralyzing him?

  I'd

also like to know how he is now "disabled". I've torn off skin, but that grows back. A broken bone is the most I could see happening, but that mends. I love how apparently he's disabled and scarred, but there are no pictures nor descriptions of his injuries.

What next lawsuits because you weren't taught how to walk properly? I wish these people hadn't been taught how to breathe.

<sarcasm>Authorities should confiscate the kid as the parent has clearly allowed it into an unsafe environment.</sarcasm>

Seriously though, what is this going to achieve? If it succeeds then no-one will want to coach and thousands of kids will loose out.

Your in the right area, this could literaly end sports for kids, or make it a lot more expensive.

  Batter up?

"Here, kid.... sign this before getting out of the batter's cage."

"What is it?"

"It's a contract absolving the coach, your teamates, the opposing team, the umpire, and the girl in the concession stand of any responsibility for bodily injuries, psychological trauma, or bad coaching."

"whatever"

"Play ball!"

"OMIGOD LITTLE JIMMY'S EYE FELL OUT! CALL 911!"

"Tough luck, kid..."

  Coaches

volunteer. They are not paid professionals. If these parents have a problem with the coach they should volunteer to coach. This lawsuit should be thrown out since it has no merit. If the parents win this suit it will stop more coaches from volunteering their time. That would be sad.

Sad day for all youth sports

Instruct all you want, but it is the kid's responsibility to do the right thing. Obviously, this kid's parents have not done the right thing.

The next lawsuits will be for alleged discrimination of playing time, field position, or some other truly trivial matter.

Long live litigation.

Not all coaches are volunteer coaches. Some youth sports organizations have club fees & paid coaches. It just depends on what the level of competition is.

  I agree

The coach is right, it is part of the game. And if they're going to sit back and be babies about it then they don't deserve to be in the sport anyway. Injury is a part of life, and sometimes you gotta get back up and try again - not sue people.

  @Xq - on fees

Your are of course quite right, so how much more do you think the fees will be when clubs have to take out massive amounts of insurance?
