Blizzard has announced that their next major release will be the sequel to StarCraft, which sold 9.5 million copies. No release date was announced but it was revealed that the game would be available for Mac and PC but probably not for consoles.
StarCraft II will remain a real-time strategy game and will see the return of the Protoss, Terran and Zerg with better mechanics and several new units. There will be a single player campaign and multiplayer over Battle.net.
"We recognize that expectations are high following the long-running popularity of the original game, but we plan to meet those expectations and deliver an engaging, action-packed, competitive experience..." said Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime.
I'm hoping to buy Supreme Commander real soon here, after I upgrade my PC to non crappy. Really? You didn't like Starcraft? Did you play it when it first came out or something like 6 years down the road?
@tib I've been awaiting Spore for a while now, but I really think it's going to fall short...
Blizzard, on the other hand, has yet to release a sub par game. So, Starcraft 2 is bound to be good.
Will never release a sub-par game because they spend incredible amounts of time on their games, and often delay or cancel them if they're not perfect. Starcraft II will be a fricken blast. If you don't believe me in how detailed they work out everything, you need look no further than their cinematic trailer (located on their website) - Look at the detail put into that, and tell me they don't care A LOT about their games.
Sup Com is definitely the best RTS out there right now, but Starcraft II should give all RTS's a run for their money (they've already got a good title to stand behind).
For those of you wanting to buy Supreme Commander, I would recommend that you hold off for a while. The reason is that they went with a new sound engine (the Xact engine), and it's more or less broken. The sound engine has been bringing top of the line computers to their knees since launch. Machines that blow the recommended specs out of the water have been chugging along at a steamy 5-10 fps in some situations.
For some reason the problem isn't affecting everyone, but the Sup Com team has acknowledged the problem and is working on it (there might be a chance that they just implement a whole different sound engine), but it takes to time to overhaul that.
Overall, the game is freakin awesome, and I certainly recommend you look into getting it. I strongly recommend that you haunt the forums for Sup Com until you see that they have fixed the problem.
Back on the StarCraft II topic: I've been wiping drool off my chin since I read the headline. I can't wait!!!
Yeah, I agree...games kinda suck here and there these days.
SC II should be good. I loved # 1.
Too bad I never patended my idea back when I was a little tyke getting into program. Spore is close to my original thought about an enginge I called the Darwin Engine, that allowed the evolution of digital beings while allowing the user to intervine, let things go naturally, and speed up/slow down time. Damn ..next time I get a good idea, i'm gonna make sure I get the royalties.
I can't agree with that more, supreme commander is the bomb. I was a huge fan of Total Annihilation back in the day.
Supcom is pretty much the sequel with massive improvements in map sizes, technologies, units, civs, and by far graphics.
But back in the day TotalA was way ahead of its time.
But in all, Age of Empires II w/expansion pretty much summed up my college weekends back in the day. Used to have lan parties at the college office where I work studied at every weekend.
Luckily the boss didn't care so much, I was a pretty good programmer and he pulled a lot of strings for me.
What sound card do you have? I've played it on a multitude of computers... a laptop and a couple desktops of mine... haven't really noticed much of an issue with sound?
Sadly EA has decided to delay Spore until next year at least, could be delayed longer. I was kind of looking forward to it myself, for now I'll settle with C&C 3 and wait to see what comes of StarCraft II.
I've tried supreme commander. It had potential to be awesome, but it was the least optimized game I'd played in years. Don't get me wrong, I've seen it in action on top of the line computers... really top of the line, and it still bogs down when the going gets rough. With the graphics turned down, you probably havn't seen how incredibly ugly the game can get.
a 200meg sound file isnt being cached, and its used several times a second. If your sound card drivers (update them) dont think to store it somewhere, the game tries to access that file from your hard drive, almost none stop.
