Global Cooling in 2020

While politicians and environmentalists worry about the fears of global warming, a growing number of scientists who have studied the effect of the sun on the Earth's climate have other worries. "The only constant about climate is change.."

In Patterson’s research more than 5,000 years worth of mud was collected from the bottom of Western Canadian fjords using sophisticated technology. Patterson stated the data collected is "one of the highest-quality climate records available."

Scientific research starting in 2002 is now sparking theories of global cooling. "Solar scientists predict that, by 2020, the sun will be starting into its weakest Schwabe solar cycle of the past two centuries, likely leading to unusually cool conditions on earth."

Global Warming.. Now it's Global Cooling..Will some egghead please tell me if I should more north or south...
Lets just call the next few years the Global Normal?

if your intrested this is a link to the article written by Dr. Patterson. It's alittle long, but I found it interesting.
  by: shoezacks   06/22/2007 06:47 AM
The current one isnt the first climate change scare.

There have been 4, now 5, in the past 120 years, 2 warming, and now 3 cooling.
  by: Gogevandire   06/22/2007 09:03 AM
  Oh dear
We all know the whole debate is the result of greedy politicians wanting an excuse for more 'green' taxes.

Cooling, warming, too many people breathing at once? Maybe they'll make a breathing tax?

  by: Maxx20     06/22/2007 11:47 AM
  Does this mean...
That we'll be able to release more carbon emissions once Global Cooling sets in?

Seems only fair after what we're having to do for this supposed Global Warming we're all responsible for.

  Warm up the Earth!
I can see the commercials now.. We'll start up close and personal to Bessie's behind, pan out real slow, and the slogan will be: "Beef, not just for eating any more..."

  I hate heat.
Bring on the coldness! Then I can wrap up warm and comfortable. :)

  Earth cycle
I don't know why everyone is making a big fuss about all of this... Before every "glacier" period there is a global warming... all I have to say is... Prepare your shovels and your winter tires!
  by: vong   06/22/2007 03:14 PM
Screw shovels, I'm preparing my diesel truck and a variety of other gas powered appliances. We'll combat global cooling with global warming, I'm taking bets.

BOOOOOOOOO!!! I was expecting you to comment something special on this one! :)

What is a "Schwabe"?
  by: cavador   06/23/2007 06:39 AM
Everyone sell their hybrids for classic muscle cars. We have to do our part to help the earth warm up.

On a side note, I was watching a science channel documentary on the earth, and they brought up something interesting... if we completely destroy panama, to the point where the whole place is gone, and the ocean depth is back to how it was, causing the pacific and alantic to fully connect, it would melt the polar icecaps, a lot of areas that currently are covered in snow would be habitable, and the weather would be a little more stable, because of how the currents would run.

On the downside, Europe would get a lot colder. Sorry Europe, you gotta take one for the team.
  by: tellgar     06/23/2007 09:57 AM
you're right, the global warming leads to global cooling. the two are not contradictory. once the ice caps melt, the gulf stream is disrupted and warm temperatures stop flowing to europe. this in turn puts all of europe under ice again. then finally, all the countries near the equator will start complaining about the european and american immigrants sneaking across their borders.
  by: ManilaRyce     06/23/2007 10:50 AM
According to what I was watching, atleast my understanding of it, it was the other way around.

Once the gulf stream is disrupted (atleast in the method I mentioned), the ice caps melt because the golf stream would then be going through the poles, and the warm temperatures stop flowing to Europe.

  Patterson is a CORPORATE SHILL
... and I thought newsmax was blacklisted!

Anyway, I posted this in the forums earlier, so sorry if you see it twice (go to the forum post for the original links):

This guy actually *is* funded by energy companies! Wow, why can't these right-wing "news" organizations disclose the conflicts of interest of their sources?

Here you go:

"Dr. R. Tim Patterson is a Professor of Geology, Department of Earth Sciences, at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada ... He is also a member of the Science Advisory Committee for the Natural Resources Stewardship Project ... The NRSP has been exposed recently as being controlled by energy industry lobbyists ... The NRSP maintains it has no direct connection with the Calgary-based group of climate change skeptics the "Friends of Science" [5] (FoS), even though the FoS's most outspoken member, Tim Ball, is now the Chairman of the NRSP. With the exact same purpose and goals, and most of the same scientific allies and members as the Friends of Science, the NRSP is viewed by many as a reincarnation of the FoS, after the FoS was "outed" by The Globe and Mail newspaper in August 2006 as being partly funded by the oil and gas industry. ... A quintessential corporate activist, Patterson has associated himself with influential and notorious public relations firms, such as The Advancement of Sound Science Coalition and APCO Worldwide."

Good catch on that news item.

I've grown to depend on academic sciences over cooperate funded ones. I take most of the news that comes from such sources with a milligram of salt.
  by: ukcn001XYZ   06/24/2007 08:43 AM
one problem, it isnt Patterson theorising clobal cooling, he just simply says that based on his research the climate is unpredictable and fluxuates though time. It's completly differnt scientist talkin' about the Solar weather,he just mentions them in article.
  by: shoezacks   06/24/2007 10:57 PM
I don't think he wrote this article with the intentions of promoting pollution. He's seams more concerned with the impact it could have on fishing industries, seeing it is his job to help them better prepare for what could be ahead.
  by: shoezacks   06/24/2007 11:09 PM
  I don't care...
...who funded this particular research. It's nothing but a rehash of the same old knowledge. We get warming, followed by cooling as a normal fluctuation occurs globally. Taken to extremes, global warming leads to ice ages (evidence has been shown - I won't go into it here). The problem actually is a decrease in the salinity of the ocean currents that help keep the polar ice caps in check. As the sea warms and algae increases, the salinity drops in the currents that melt the edges of the ice caps. This allows the ice caps to expand, which creates more "white" on the earth, which reflects more of the sun's energy (i.e. heat), which causes even lower temperatures. Sometimes, the lower temperatures are too much for the resulting increase in ocean salinity too overcome and we're into another ice age.

Besides, the kind of global cooling that results in "Day After Tomorrow"-style climate change takes thousands of years. Frankly, I don't give a rat's a$$ about what happens thousands of years from now.

  oh shut up about newsmax
if your perfer a diffrent source then google news it. I gave the actual article in a comment, Thats what i orginal came across. I got the source from just typing it in to google news so grow the hell up.
  by: shoezacks   06/25/2007 06:19 AM
Nothing against you personally. merely an observation about - it's NOT a credible source of information.

  High School Class c1973
I guess my classes were taught correcly in high school from the scientific consensus at that time: That Global cooling was upon us. Seems that scientists don't know as much as they think and politicians will use anything to gain control over us.
by: It Matters   06/25/2007 08:38 PM
ahahahahahahahahahahahah, you cannot use source watch as a source and expect to be taken seriously. So if Exxon pays for research and it supports the Global Warming lemmings(Algor,Micheal Mann)are still gonna cry about?

So Algore could destroy the world...
If Algore and his followers were to succeed in reducing the earth's protective greenhouse gasses, the whole planet could end up freezing during the next cooling cycle.

Where do we sign up to sue Algore for destroying the planet?

Good thing we have Gearge Bush to save us from the next ice age.
