Jane Balogh from Seattle has been charged with misdemeanor making a false statement to a public official and told that if she does not plead guilty she will face felony charges after she registered her Australian shepherd-terrier to vote.
Balogh says that she didn't place any valid votes in the dog's name and was just trying to show that it's simple for non-citizens to vote. "I was trying to prove that our system is flawed. So I got myself in trouble," she said.
Prosecutors will recommend she be fined $250 and be ordered to do 10 hours of community service. "[You] can't simply look the other way. They say you should let sleeping dogs lie, but you can't let voting dogs vote," said Prosecutor Dan Satterberg.
