Dog Ditches Owner's Chevy Impala in the River

Idaho: On returning from a walk, Mark Ewing could only watch as his black labrador Charlie leapt through the open window of his Chevy Impala and knocked the vehicle into neutral, setting it on a course for the Pend Oreille River.

Charlie abandoned the vehicle before it hit the water. "There's nothing weirder than looking at your car cruising down your driveway when you're not in it and seeing your dog jump out and then watching your car go splash," said Ewing.

Matters did not improve for Ewing when the tow truck showed up. The driver, Keith, asked him to hold his dentures while he swam out to hook the drowned Chevy onto the truck.

  neutral?

My car always sits in neutral in my driveway...I just happen to use this little device called a handbrake.

If its a automatic transmission it only needs to be put to park. But its weird that it went to neutral from park without the brake. (if its an automatic)

Shift locks in cars have only been standard equipment for 12 years now. None of the Chevy's I currently own (3 of em)require me to hit the brake to shift it out of park.

The neutral safety switch does require the car to be in Park or Neutral before the starter will engage though.

  Here's a question

Why are there so many cars that are parked uphill from a river?

  LoL@

story, "The driver, Keith, asked him to hold his dentures while he swam out..."

is that a joke?
if its not I would say it is because rivers are normally the lowest point on the landscape, that being the reason the water flows along them....

I think the point was "why would you park your car uphill from a river when it could roll down into it". Not "why are rivers at the bottoms of hills"

 by: jeniq     06/26/2007 02:01 PM
But your always going to be

Uphill from a river if you live near one.

Yeah, I thought, Dog, wait, a real dog? Nah.

 by: seniorgato     06/26/2007 03:28 PM
  hmm

Depending on the year it could of been a manual transmission. He could of simply just had the car parked in first gear with no parking brake on, dog jumps in, hits the shifter, pops it out of gear, and the car is in neutral.
