UK Set to Upgrade Cannabis to Class B Drug

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown looks set to reverse the government's earlier decision to downgrade cannabis to a class C drug. The change would mean that dealers would face possible jail time rather than a caution and confiscation of the drug.

The move comes in response to studies indicating that harder forms of the drug like skunk are becoming common in the UK. In the past five years mental health hospitals have seen a 63 percent rise in the number of cannabis-related admissions.

"I have no regret about downgrading it to Class C.... But there has been a change since then with the introduction into this country of the more toxic skunk derivative of cannabis," said former Home Secretary David Blunkett.

  Skunk sucks
It is too strong for most people, and it smells like hell. Smoking it makes playing music, painting, or writing damn near impossible sometimes.

Give me some classic White Widow, World War 5, or some good ol' Blueberry or Grapefruit.

We have a labour government, they havent realised its not 1898 anymore.

You're really cool for knowing the street names of some drugs. I wish I could be like you.

So what makes you so sure that theironboard is personally unfamiliar with these varieties?

TIB has been here a long time and from my observation what you see is really what get. He doesn't talk crap for the sake of looking e-cool.

Hail emperor TiB.

I wish I was more like TiB.
  by: Gogevandire   07/19/2007 11:42 AM
Never thought he wasn't unfamiliar with them, by the sounds of it, he is.

What I was drawing attention to was that the comment was unnecessary and just makes him look like he's "showing off" that he does drugs.

Remove the "n't" or "un" from first sentance above ;)
  by: andyt   07/19/2007 11:46 AM
So perhaps his expert opinion on skunk and other forms of cannabis is relevent then?
  by: Gogevandire   07/19/2007 11:48 AM
  Expert opinion?
Perhaps "Skunk is too strong for most people thus is not as popular as the weaker version, therefore the governments arguement is flawed and show's they really are regretting their previous decision, in my opinion"

Tell me of what relevance the last line has? I'm guessing only a small population of readers would be able to tell you what drug that is, let alone the differences between them.
  by: andyt   07/19/2007 11:53 AM
  I think
People should be able to choose for their selves on this one and the law should be set by age I feel 25 is about right due to this drug having such a bad effect on younger people.

But smoking of any sort is a dumb thing to do and almost impossible to give up.
  by: captainJane     07/19/2007 11:53 AM
A few of my friends have just quit.

They're all saving up for 42" HDI TV's, about £700 from ASDA, with their smoking money.
  by: Gogevandire   07/19/2007 12:08 PM
  This comes
at the same time as the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith admits on national TV that she's smoked it.

It's like, "do as we say, not as we do".

Worthless hypocrits.

  Labour strikes again
Lmao @ gordon brown, nobody dies from smoking cannabis and its illegal, how many people die from alcohol related incidents? Or from smoking cigerettes, but its ok because you can tax that, right? I understand that the nut house are seeing a rise in admissions, but cannabis doesnt cause mental health problem, it might make them more apparent, but they were there anyway. Make it legal, then control it, simple as that.
  by: johnm86   07/19/2007 01:39 PM
Gordon Brown can Swivel On My Fat One
This whole thing just is a complete farce. They don't give a shit about the health of the country, or the young people in it. They say that they are upgrading it to a class B to 'protect' young people, but Labour only recently made 24 hour drinking available.

24 Hour drinking has quite possibly TREBLED the number of A&E admissions in this country (

But I don't think we'll be seeing them take drinking back to the normal hours will we? Not as long as they can tax it.

It's all about money. Nothing at all but freaking money.

  I smoked a skunk once
But I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to light the head or the tail. It tasted terrible and the smell was awful. Smoking skunk should be banned….so should smoking porcupine . Aren’t you glad you arn’t not kewl unlike me?

Gordon Brown = Asshat
  by: Valkyrie123     07/19/2007 02:46 PM
Thats crap, one A+E department for one month.

more than 95% of places that wanted 24 liscences were supermarkets.

Pubs just dont open any later, those that do, did anyway.
  by: Gogevandire   07/19/2007 02:56 PM
no offence, but where did you get 95% were supermarkets? alot of clubs and pubs have extended their opening and closing hours, so more time to drink?
ill admit alot of supermarkets applied for the license, but 95% of all applicants is overly exaggerated

"Pubs just dont open any later, those that do, did anyway."

So why have at least 4 pubs in my town centre extended their closing time to 1am, instead of the old 11pm? i can now goto the pub til 1am, get legless, then goto a club and drink some more til 5-6am.

Im not picking on you, but your comments have no truth to them
  by: johnm86   07/19/2007 03:09 PM
But it's undeniable that drinking-related emergencies have risen since 24 hour drinking was introduced. No one could have expected anything different to happen.

So to me, it seems completely ass-backwards that this government, which cares so much about our health, is quite happy to let our young populace drink themselves to death as long as they pay their taxes, but any 'evil tax-free weed' must be banned.
  by: daniel2508     07/19/2007 03:11 PM
They have always opened until late just closed the doors except now they do it legally.
  by: captainJane     07/19/2007 03:12 PM
Im not denying that they did, but they wouldnt let everyone in the bar stay, now everyone can stay and get drunk til 1am if you understand what i mean?
  by: johnm86   07/19/2007 03:19 PM
Firstly, I'm speaking as an ex Bar Manager or a private members club that had an annual turnover of about $1million.
I know what I'm talking about here.

95% came from an information pack Coors UK sent me.

Places dont really want to open longer, because theres only so much people can drink and only so much they have to spend.

I dont think weed should be banned, but you also dont have a clue about how the liscencing laws changed anything.
The news article even quietly admitted it was making mountains out of a mole hills.

Places did just let everyone stay, I know, I've been in them, I remember being 16 and stumbling out of a pub at 3am, long before the hours were extending.

I know the papers were all running horror stories about how the world was going to end but it was all crap.
Clubs used to serve till 2am, if you werent fighting drunk by then, you arent going to be at 4am.

I've seen people unconcious in the gutter in the early afternoon, bottle of cider in hand.
Not a lot your going to do about it.

Incidently, the only reason a limit was ever established was because during one of the world wars, people wereturning up hung over or still drunk to munitions factories and blowing themselves up.
  by: Gogevandire   07/19/2007 03:32 PM
I wasn't arguing about the 24-hour drinking laws...

I was just introducing them as a comparison against the Governments "You're all too stupid to look after yourselves so we'll do it for you" attitude.
  by: daniel2508     07/19/2007 03:52 PM
Ahhh - The good ol' daze ...
I used to smoke that much weed back in college - I had a poster of Bob Marley on my wall. In the poster, he was wearing a T-shirt with a picture of me on it

  It sounds like
The dealers just took a good situation and screwed the pooch.
  by: seniorgato     07/19/2007 05:11 PM
if they are going to do something like this they should have hash still a 'c' and put grass up in 'b' ... I'd rather they actually just moved the potent grass to 'b' and left everything else alone though.
  by: AccessG     07/19/2007 06:02 PM
  It's so simple!
Smoke too much and pass out. Drink too much and die. Which one sounds more dangerous? Also the benefits of using it for AIDs or cancer patients instead of pain killers not only promotes eating, movement, and a happy state of mind.It lessens the risk of depenacy and less impact on the body over a long period of time.Even the risk of lung cancer is elimanted when marinal is already on the market! Legalize for medicine forget the stoners.
  by: rudegirl139   07/19/2007 07:08 PM
is often misused to describe any form of cannabis that has been grown in a controlled indoor environment.

Some research via google will also tell how long the actual skunk has been around.

By the way Skunk contains more of the variety of cannabis that get's a user stoned compared to White Widow which has a higher high. Although the skunk does get one higher than Afghani for example.

At the end of the day the effects also depend on how it was grown, when it was harvested and how it was processed after the harvest.

The advances in growing techniques, research and selective breeeding are what has led to some of the strains being "too strong". As it's more concentrated, less mass is required.

Let's say for example decades ago one used 1g for a cookie, today one needs to use only 0.1g (just an example and no one really needs to use it)

....ooops, getting carried away again with one of the few topics I actually have something to say about.

  Please Read
I have to say i havent heard so much s**t in quite some time.

The only person in my opinion who actually has half a clue on this subject is daniel.

The UK government (and most others) couldn’t give a flying f**k about its people and their health for the very fact alcohol and tobacco are legal, yet are probably in the top 5 of the most harmful and dangerous drugs to man kind in the world and most likely the top 2 in the uk (not much meth etc around here really compared to usa... yet)

And you know why it’s legal? Of course you do, money money money.

The UK government made 7 billion alone from taxation last year for just those 2 drugs.

@TIB - i cannot believe what you said btw. I mean …just wow.

“It is too strong for most people, and it smells like hell. Smoking it makes playing music, painting, or writing damn near impossible sometimes.”

You couldn’t be more wrong if you tried, and you’re just so wrong, I am actually thinking you did try and thus just having a laugh, I hope so anyways. Either that, or your just very strange and seriously the minority (i.e. it has an opposite effect on you then 99% of other people)

I can do ANYTHING I can when straight and to be perfectly honest (seriously no rubbish) I can actually do some things better when stoned. (Like programming for instance)

I am of course speaking for myself here and only myself. Going back to the above incase anyone is interested, I find weed helps me concentrate so much more. When I am straight and coding, I do get bored / side tracked very easily, and when it comes to problems / ideas, I usually have immediately about 2-3 different methods / solutions that pop into my head to achieve my idea or overcome the problem

However, when stoned I usually have immediately 10+ different methods / solutions that pop into my head on how to tackle a certain problem etc, and from that can quickly go through each one and determine the most appropriate solution (all usually within 5 minutes)

Weed seriously increases my creatively / concentration, and I’m sure most people who have half a clue (i.e. actually experience it and not just go on hearsay) would agree with me.

I would also like to make the point that I am not saying this to try and be cool or anything (believe me, I am not cool) it’s just my true experience and belief.

Going way back to what TIB said, It’s a fact that the stronger the weed is the better, for the simple fact that the stronger it is, the less you smoke, as most (99.99%) of weed smokers (and by that if mean regular smokers, not little kids having the odd jay) don’t want to be “over” stoned, as it’s really not a pleasant feeling.

Also, here’s a little question for you that I hope may make people think twice about this beautiful natural plant compared to other man made shit out there, which kills thousands upon thousands of people and yet is legal.

Picture this – You are walking home late at night and you HAVE to walk down one of two alleyways.

One alleyway has 7 men down it walking towards you smoking weed who are obviously stoned.

The other alleyway has 7 men down it walking towards you drinking beer / whatever and are obviously drunk.

Which alleyway would you walk down……??

…. I know which one I would choose ?

P.S – I haven’t even started / discussed the medial properties of this plant nor the fact mankind has been using it for at 5000 years (and that’s just what we know off, bound to be way longer).

Well said... I also find that cannabis greatly enhances certain areas of my mind... Mainly problem solving. It allows me to "think outside the box" a lot easier, for example.

At the end of the day, it is a drug. Some people don't like drugs (though these same people take several every day, just the 'legal' ones).

Weed is not worthy of the condemnation it recieves.

  Smoked Out
I've smoked and sampled an extensive amount of cannabis, and various hash. You might be sarcastic Andy_whatevah (I was being nostalgic for some good weed that I haven't had for a long time- you knucklehead) but I do know the difference between a bad high and a good high; why Humboldt County has a such a good rep, where to get quality weed in a number of cities in a few different continents, the folklore behind various strains...

I am completely anti-hard drug, but I still do not feel Skunk falls into the category. It's strong, but you don't have to smoke it. It's not addicting, for one thing. It does make people stupid or lethargic, or too stoned to have a decent conversation.

Skunk is usually what's only available where I live-- so I don't actively seek it out. Well, I am just a short plane hop to Amsterdam and I am on vacation, so maybe I'll go there and try some other flavours. Who's with me!?

We could do a comparison of Indica/Sativa cross breeds grown hydroponicly compared to organic grown. Oh, what the hell do I know…ever smoke a porcupine? Just make sure it’s dead before you light it.

  by: mousejunkie     07/19/2007 09:21 PM
  skunk is a blanket term
if you've ever smoked weed with a name, it's 'skunk'. If you've ever smoked bud with no seeds, it's 'skunk'.

  by: pornohippy   07/20/2007 12:20 AM
Skunk used to just be stinky no-name weed.... considered cheap and barely effective, often grown outdoors. Then it started being associated with very stinky and very strong cannabis.

  by: theironboard     07/20/2007 12:15 PM
I'm thinking about quitting not smoking.
  by: shaohu     07/20/2007 12:50 PM

  Love for the Plant
Cannabis enhances most experiences including sex I have even started working out high get an mp3 player and you will blow through a workout. One thing I still can't do right when I am high is order something correctly in the drive thru.
  by: alkaline31   07/20/2007 04:28 PM
What do you do, start ordering everything on the menu?
  by: ablindmansees     07/20/2007 04:40 PM
not true. weed with no seeds is called sinsemillia, meaning literally spanish for no seeds.

the term skunk refers to a family of strains categorized by the distinctive smell which somewhat resembles the animal (but better and tastier of course!)

There are many good strains that are not skunk.
  by: reverend j roach     07/24/2007 08:19 AM
i thought it was sensimilia...

@ no one in particular

firstly the rise in "the number of cannabis-related admissions" could be down to the fact that now it is semi-legal people feel more open about talking to their doctors, where before they would have lied, and thats a good thing no?

also there has been a lot of unsolved crimes and murder in Britain lately, stabbings and whatnot, so their crimesolving figures have gone down... so if they put this back up to class B they can arrest more people and viola the crime busting figures soar thru the roof!!!
