British Prime Minister Gordon Brown looks set to reverse the government's earlier decision to downgrade cannabis to a class C drug. The change would mean that dealers would face possible jail time rather than a caution and confiscation of the drug.
The move comes in response to studies indicating that harder forms of the drug like skunk are becoming common in the UK. In the past five years mental health hospitals have seen a 63 percent rise in the number of cannabis-related admissions.
"I have no regret about downgrading it to Class C.... But there has been a change since then with the introduction into this country of the more toxic skunk derivative of cannabis," said former Home Secretary David Blunkett.
